Answered the call for a ho out of OI with Capt. Nemo (we have actually fished a good bit together, use to be neighbors). Ran out around the 500 and took a while before we got some pullage but we managed a nice 45-50# YF and the catch of the day was an approx 170# BF on, get this, a Penn Senator spooled with 50lb. mono. Pretty work boys. Did see lots of life and saw some tuna busting around the break at the 600 line which was pretty cool, even saw a tuna knock a bait fish 6 feet in the air.

I have a couple more pics to add, JhonnyO took a beating on the senator and a 170lb BFT, broke my standup harness, we had to get on plane to catch him during his initial run, wore all three of us out, but JhonnyO did the majority of the work, I just stuck in the face with a couple gaffs.

Always hit the most under gun'd rig on the boat don't they? Prob safe 2 say Senators have landed more tuna in their day than any reel out there but it sure woulda been nice to have a 50 2spd on the crankin side.

true that, the senator has its fair share of blood on them,

Nice job fellas as the Bluefin bite continues. Great story on the small rod/reel which make the kill sweeter.

Do you have a Robalo? It looks like that boat in your picture is a Robalo. I have one just like it. Had it for 7 years. How do you like the way she handles?

Nice catch. You should have the Penn Senator bronzed and put on display.

Jig Monster - I would say one hell of a fight would be accurate if not an understatement! ;)

rth3030 - Yup that is a Robalo 2114, i repowered it with an Opti 200 2 years ago Nov. and this will be my 7th season. It rides BIG, great boat for jigging and everything i do in the bay. I have had it 12 miles offshore and would go farther out no problem. The thing that bothers me is the transom well, still haven't figured it out but i am covering it with foam this season(it does make a nice live well though:))

Kayak fisherman - hahahahah that is a good one but probably true!

Those old Senators were some tough reels in their day!! Both the 1093 lb blue marlin mounted at Rudee Inlet and the 1142 lb Blue at Oregon Inlet were both caught on 9/0 Senators... Back before all the charters started using the gold.. Only saw them on the private boats back then...

I knew the senator would hold up, I was worried about the 50lb mono main line and 100lb mono leader. The line was pinging like a guitar string when we got down to a 1/4 spool, JhonnyO was crying like a baby when I backed the drag off to ease the pain on the line at a 1/4 spool.

sorry jhonnyO, but you were, just a little

I have a 1996 Robalo, heaviest 21 foot boat around. I had this boat since 2002. I just repowered with a 2007 225 mercury optimax. I keep this boat down on near piney point. Had her in some rough weather off Point Lookout and she handles great. I also have taken my boat 12 milles off Ocean City in Mar and she handled the Ocean with confidence. I plan on taking my boat to Hatteras this year for some big dolphin. I really like this boat and she has held up good over the years.
