NEED SOME ADVICE--I have an all aluminum trailer with a Powerwinch and hauling a 23' boat. The trailer is designed as a "float on" and usually I only need to use the winch for the last 5- 8 feet depending on the ramp angle and water depth. The winch is mounted on an angled aluminum beam rather than on a winch platform.

The angle of the beam and location of the winch places the alignment of the cable higher than the bow eye which in turn frequently results in the cable being pulled down into and buried in the wrapped cable on the spool which causes kinks, broken cable strands and cable replacement.

I have discussed this problem with the mfr. who indicates that given the light weight aluminum and design of the trailer frame,a standard winch platform cannot be used to raise the winch to a horizontal position as the frame will not support the pressure and stress created by the raised winch pulling and holding the boat.

The Mfr.has prposed to do the following;(1)replace the existing beam,(2) Drill the winch mounting holes lower on the beam,(3) Cut a slot in the beam so that the cable can run directly to the bow eye on a level line from the winch spool.

This sounds like a reasonable solution but I wanted to get the thoughts of others as I want to get this problem fixed ! Thoughts, suggestions, etc.will be appreciated.

I just pulled the 912 off my trailer yesterday. After many years I'm finally tired of dealing with cables. I had to keep a big crowbar in the track to get the cable off the spool. I went with a 2 speed hand winch and put on a strap - give the HO something to do  . The Mfg solution sounds good but I'm sure it's not going to be cheap. Can' a brace welded to the existing post to handle the additional stress? Binding cable will always be potential problem.

Bob H- Thanks- good suggestions. The mfr. is covering the cost of the beam and I believe the dealer will install. My concern is whether it is a workable solution. We discussed adding bracing but their engineers are advising against it.I have been thinking about switching to 2 speed manual with a strap for your same reasons but I don't think it will solve the basic alignment problem.

A 2" strap won't bind so the direction of the pull is not a problem.
