I keep my boat in Va Beach and fish for rock in the fall and winter. My buddy just got a new boat and wants to try the spring trophy rock on the Potomac. We will be launching out of Lewisetta. My question is what areas in that part of the river are good for trolling for spring rock. Thanks in advance.

There is a long deep hole north of 7 on the MD side. Have had alot of success there the past couple of years.

follow the fleet
rockfish will only bite in the spring if there are more than 25 boats within a sq mile

Would it be just as good or better to fish out of colonial beach? That would be a much shorter drive for us(coming from culpeper area). Thanks again.

I recommend Lewisetta area above Colonial Beach. Reason is that there is alot more water and opportunities from Lewisetta including a short run into Md bay waters. The river is much much wider at down there. Popular spots to troll are around Potomac bouy's 7 and 9, Pt Lookout, Piney Point, Ragged Point. Good luck

What about Blackistone Island? I know it is further North but I have had pretty good luck there sometimes. Saturday is looking to be a nasty day (windy). Wind will still blow in the Potomac but not as bad as it would down south and in the bay......

Thanks everyone for the help. I really appreciate it. Looks like we are bagging it for saturday( too much for a 22` CC). We will try it later in the season.

From Piney Point to the mouth of the river will be all you can handle Sat in a 30' boat. The tide will be w/ the wind until 11:00 or so and then it will become dangerous out there. If the tree tops are rollin' I ain't trollin'..... period

I agree with the comment's above on the water and wind. I have fished the lower Potomac for over 35 years and 20kt wind
out of the North West is BAD NEWS for the lower part of the river. I have been waiting for tomorrow to come since December 15th but I guess I will have to wait a few more days. Middle of next week is looking better in the wind department.
