I am looking for a place to go dove hunting, anything in the VB/ chesapeake area, or the eastern shore. I have not seen any corn cut and am concerned that there wont be any in time for opening day. I have hundreds of acres to hunt around my farm in NC and I know that none of that will be cut. thanks in advance for any help

I feel your pain. I am in the same boat. I am in Richmond, and have no were to go (no where that is decent). I don't mind paying to hunt, assuming a snowballs chance at a good hunt. I tried a $100 hunt/pig roast up on the James river two years ago, that was an expensive lunch.
Called Southhampton outfitters and left 3 messages. They have a similar setup for $50. They have not returned my call.
Wish someone had a place for a Tidalfish get-together. I would pay my part.

Start looking in the Virginian pilot this week, sometimes they advertise there for pay fields, If you take a ride down to Pungo, in the past few years they have signs for dove fields on the corner of Gum bridge and Princess anne, and also near the post office in Pungo, last I checked they are 25 bucks for 3 day hunt or soething like that, no corn cut that I have seen down there yet though. Good luck

I was down there yestersay and didnt see anything. I have seen more doves than I have for the past couple years. I really hope there is something available. I have thousands of acres of land to hunt on the northern neck but dont want to drive up there and find no cut corn.

Does anybody down in VA hunt over sunflowers? That's pretty much all we hunt over up here in MD.

I have looked there before, and it has never looked good. it looks very small, but I dont know if there is another part. I have hunted the davis place in pungo for years, but I heard the ole man died last year, and I dont know if they will be doing that anymore. I really hope something better comes along.

I saw a sign yesterday off Head of River rd in Chesapeake that advertised $25.00. They'll start cutting the fields this week. Often cutting during the hunt. I usually hunt a farm on Land O Promise rd. but so far, the corns still up.

I have corn on the ground, water, grit and roost within a hundred yards, and no birds ! ! !
Two weeks ago they were thick - - - where did they go ? ? ?
An old county boy told me that this time of year they congregated in canteloupe fields to eat the seeds from split and rotten lopes.
Anybody heard that before ? ? ?

P.S. My resident flock of RP geese also disappeared ? ? ?

I would believe that theory.
Last year on Opening day, I was working right across from a big produce operation. Watermelons, Canteloupe, etc. etc.
It looked like something from a Venezuelan video...there were friggin Doves everywhere. At noon, the farm hands started blasting away, and were waxing their fair share of birds. Sucked to be across the street watching[sad]

Most of mine left too. I had 200-300 and now there is a dozen or two. I think the neighbors must have cut the sunflowers. When they start blasting they will be back. My Ithaca is oiled up and I have 4 boxes of Winchester handicap and supersport loads in 7 1/2 and 8's. I am going to take my girl friend and her dad. I throw a decoy over the power line and it works well.

Kepone, Do you shoot those Winchester shells because of your leg?[grin]

The ones that left were prolly early birds. There will be plenty to come. We hunt over bushogged ragweed fields near my grandfathers in Lunenburg County every year and have lots of fun. Will be there this year with a few MOJO Dove decoys as well as a couple tossed across the power lines. Happy shooting to those that go. We are having a 16 and under hunt on opening day that should be a lot of fun. The kids get to shoot the first half of the afternoon and then we get to burn some powder.
