Cecil my fresh water fishing buddy told me they caught a lot of brim last week. Nice ones to.
Going to try some crickets and brim busters behind Herfort Tomorrow and see if we can get in them. Anyone had any luck yet on the big brim.
Monday headed to the James river if the wind is not kicking to bad and same buddy went twice last week with 200 one day and about 135 on the other. Said the big ones are in up there.
Kinda wide open this year and not to much of a chance to enjoy it yet but any info would be great.
Thanks.

Yep,, thats it. Hertford. Just below Elizabth City.
Lived at Lake Waccamaw NC for 20 years and the last 10 I came up here in the spring with 7 or 8 other boats brim fishing. Things changed and made the move and have loved it here every since. We use to bring 1000 crickets per boat and be out in 3 days. Halls creek Just below Nixonton NC and Hertford are the best two brim rivers I have ever fished.
Where the little water meets the bigger water in the Little River out of Halls creek I bought the Point in Nixonton NC. Of course then these boys got me into salt water fishing and been broke ever since.
Behind the police station up river in Hertford are the biggest blue gills I have ever seen. Always call them tittie brim. Had to put them agenst your chest to get the hook out. NO way to hold them in your hand. Their that big. That deep water river holds the best crappie and pan fish around. Of course there is a 20 fish limit now but we use to load two 85 qt coolers years ago every trip.
Bass are starting to move so I'll know tomorrow if the brim are seeking shallow water or not by tomorrow afternoon.
Two day fishing for the lady and me this weekend so photos will follow.
Carolina tomorrow, Jame River Monday. Don't get much better than that. dancedance

Not going to be able to let anyone know if they have started bitting or not.
Leaving the house I could tell the water was down and when we hit the ramp in Hertford the wind had already started blowing.
Water has dropped at least a foot and a half in the past three days and I could see up under the knees where they usually hide.
Didn't warm up like we though it would and the wind kept us up in the creeks but picked up a few fish in the middle of those on beetle spins but nothing to write home about.
Along the few banks we did try, the ones that bit were out far from shore. CP used crickets and worms from the rear while I was working the fast bait (beetle spins) on the front. She got tired and switch and caught two but no blue gills today.
Beautiful day on the water, still nippy with the wind but we always have a blast doing our thing fishing.
Once the water gets back up and after a day or so I would bet the bite would be back on.
Usually first part of April the big ones start moving around looking for something to get into.

At least you were out on the water and it was a beautiful day, Friend of mine and myself went to the Meherrin River on a canoe trip. All I can say is awesome! We put in the river just up in Va. and canoed for 4 hrs down the river, river was flowing at a decent clip so it was a easy paddle. The best part is I found a 4 million year old snail and clam shell in tack, and until today its never been touched by human hands!! .......well thats my story and I'm sticking too it ! Local guy finds a few large (3"- 4") sharks teeth and whale back bones along the river sometimes. I talked to a guy fishing on the bridge and he said he has caught rock up that far. It is an unbelievable river!

Livaboard, the true story behind the story I told is alot better! I still can't believe it, its a classic case of dumbas@.
When you get mad because you didn't catch fish it's time to stop fishing because your are missing the point! I went to the Chowan the other weekend with the family ( daughters in college so I don't get to see her that much ) and we didn't catch a thing but...... the truck ran good, the boat ran good, no one got hurt / wet, we were all together for the whole day and it was a beautiful day on the water and in 2 years I won't remember that we didn't catch a fish. And like you said "we'll get them next time".

Went to the James for croaker today and fished hard. 7 hours on the water. Not a bite. (Did catch a anchor and about 100 foot of rope. LOL Not ours either.) Bit last week and the weekend but today was not the day for anyone we saw at the ramp loading back up. Still a great day. :)

Luke,
What were you using for bait? and whereabouts were you fishing? I've had good luck using fresh shrimp and fishing not too far from Huntington park.

Fresh shrimp and even had squid on . They caught them last week and Saturday night off the pier. Just won't happening Monday for us. Talked to several others at the dock. No one had a bite. When we come, stay home. When we leave, go fishing. lOL
