Used my last pound of crabmeat tonight , made some crabby patties. Tasted real good , but this year I might have to invest in a vacume sealer to obtain more freshness. Any thought's guys.

Do it!!! You won't be sorry.
Meat remains much fresher when vacuum sealed. Freeze the meat in a container first, then place it in a vac bag and seal. That way you are not removing the juices from the meat.
If you pre make crab cakes....... place them on a tray, cover with AL foil or Plastic wrap, freeze them overnight, then remove from freezer, remove wrapping, and Vac seal. Best way I have found to preserve freshness and flavor.

Jim, We are on our third Tillia. When this one craps out (as I know it will) it will be replaced with a commercial brand. Don't know which manufacturer yet.
Tillia makes an affordable unit that does not hold up (as far as I am concerned) to heavy use. Shop wisely.

When I freeze crab meat I spread the meat on a tray and place it in the freezer first. Once the meat begins to freeze I then Vac Pak. This way I don't lose any jucies when I pump down
Everyone has their favorite way of doing things

Jerry, I agree about the Tilia Vaccum sealer. After a while of use, they stop sealing properly. I have to start and stop mine while rearranging the bag in the vaccum channel until it finally seals. The pump noise doesnt seem as powerful as it once was either. If you find a better sealer please share. I will too.

don't skimp on price. I have had 3 Food Savers and a black and decker. the only one that works with almost no issues is the Food Saver V3840. Its not cheap but it works wet or dry with a perfect seal nearly every time.

Burch, Have you noticed that everything that used to suck GOOD when you first got it stops sucking after a while.:eek2::oops:Don't but a cheap one because it won't last and after you buy 3 cheap ones, you could have bought a commercial one.............Gary

The model we now have is the V3825. I don't know if the V3840 was available when we bought the one we now have. So far it has worked satisfactorily. Keeping our fingers crossed.

I'm cheap, so I bought the cheapest food saver I found (V2240). It's in year 3 and works as well as the day I bought it...I see on the Amazon site it has one of the highest ratings by the customers and at $104 you can't go wrong.

I have Food Saver 2490 that I bought a few years ago and for the most part have no problems.
Only thing you have to be careful of is with wet products. When doing crab meat I take a paper towel, fold it down to about 1" wide and lay it across the top of the meat the whole widths of the bag. Then seal it on wet. The towel soaks up the juice and gives a good seal. The paper towel idea was actually in the instruction manual.
Other than that, no issues.

Even though it helps seal better you are sucking good juices from the meat into the paper towel. Freeze the meat first and then seal it............Gary

I agree with Gary.
So will you when you try that method.
Perhaps I should have said:
I agree with Gary.
I may not be right, but my crab cakes do taste better that way.
Yeah, that's what I meant to say..............

Tim, I don't think your wife's family is trying to get over on you. They just don't understand the cost of crabbing. I'm sure if you explain things, it will all work out. There are some out there that always want something but never give anything. Pull the weeds and and it all gets better...........Gary
