Went out this morning to hit the same old reliable spot at the red barns. Natta!

Fished the mouth of LaGrange and picked up a couple small ones but the bite just was not there.

I hit a few spots across the river, again Natta! I heard of a good bite down around Whiting Creek so I motored on down river. Right at slack tide, the bite turned on in about 24 feet of water right off the red channel bouy to the creek. Caught over 20 nice croaker in about an hour. All average sized fish. No horses. All fish caught on shrimp. I kept 6 of the nicest ones for dinner. Yummy!

Happy Croakin'

Also fished off the red barns yesterday for croaker. Pretty slow. Caught 3 in 22-30 feet. Nothing shallow. Very nice fish at 14-16". Outgoing tide. Ran downriver and noticed some good marks on the bottom off Best Boatyard in 23-27'. It was slack tide but just as the tide turned the bite started caught another 5 nice fish (14-16") in about an hour. Time to go home so called it a day. Used cut squid for bait. Water temp was 59, clarity good and conditions glassey. Shakedown trip for the boat and came home with the broom tied to the hardtop and fish in the box, so all in all a good bluebird day.

Seems like that stretch of river in front of Best Boatyard down to Whiting Creek is the place to be. Yesterday was my "shakedown" day, too. It is always nice to catch a few fish on Day 1.

Found the croaker yesterday out from Urbanna creek and up at #10. Couldn't buy a fish in front of the barns. Most were in the 13-14" range but we kept a dozen between 15-17". Great day on the water. Good luck if you head out this weekend.

Good to hear some big ones are still around. Squid or shrimp bait? Hope to get out of Whiting Creek again soon.
