I fished next to a channel marker by the fleet yesterday in about 20 some feet of water and caught a bunch of small blue cats around a pound or so with only 6 keepers around 3-4 pounds. Last week I fished between there and the Jrb on the newport news side and caught a bunch of nicer cats between 4-8lbs but when we stopped there yesterday not even a bite.We had caught some decent croaker there last week but only caught a couple around the fleet yesterday. We were using shrimp and cut menhaden and as usual the better fish were on the menhaden. We actually put in at the Lafayette river and ran all the way up there in my 16' cc and when we got back it was on empty , Lol. Thats as far as I have been in the james and I will do the huntington ramp next time to go up river but are there better size fish a little bit further past the fleet ? I know hopewell , dutch gap ect. are the BIG fish producers but i'm just looking for some around 5-10lbs or so. I'm sure the lack of rain has pushed them further up river since my usual spot came up empty yesterday. Thanks Dan

Thats a longer haul that it looks on a clear day from the jrb to the ghost fleet. If you can make it up as far as ferry there can be some bigger cats. If you really want to get the big ones put in way farther like Jordan Point and head up river. If you are looking for a bunch of eating size cats I have had good luck up past the mouth of the Chicahomony near Claremont.

Thanks for the report. Not sure where your coming from but there's a nice public ramp on the Warwick River at the end of Denbigh Blvd. If the conditions are rough you can always fish the Warwick and pick up some nice eaters without making much of a run at all.

Thanks for the info guys. I live in chesapeake and put in at the layafette all summer and fish around Nit , n.o.b , hrbt , mmbt and the jrb alot. I usually fish up past the Jrb every spring for the nice croaker and cats. Thanks again
