View Full Version : Question Gulf Oil Spill & crab prices
As the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico nears the shore it will certainly affect the crab ,shrimp, oyster & other seafood products that are harvested there, one of the unwanted effects will surely be be a rise in the price of crabs, shrinp & other seafood products this summer due to their scarcity .

The price of "life" just went up............again. But at least we are still alive as much living in Gulf waters won't be. Gas up too ....................Gary

My market begins next sunday I'm counting on Gulf Shrimp to be available
this summer. I guess we will see.
Dale
shrimp should be there this weekend, La. has opened up an emergency shrimp season to allow the shrimpers to get out & get the shrimp before they get fouled with oil,,,once the waters get fouled with oil the shrimping will probably stop, along with the crabbing & oystering.
probably good for the harvesters here & elsewhere , but disatrous for the harvesters there.
Miss. is already getting the crabbers to pull their pots
it is going to be interesting to see how this develops & affects the Seafood prices & availability

Yea Rich,
I saw that about the La Shrimpers.
Guess I'm be looking for NC Green Shrimp come summer.
Sould fare quite well for watermen on the east coast.

Interesting. To those on here who sell their catch randomly, may be a good time to knock on a few local crab places that depend on out of state crabs and line up some agreements. I'm sure they're aware of the situation.

Right on Herb,
Bet you'll be seeing trucks with South Carolina & Georgia tags around this summer!
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration on Sunday blocked recreational and commercial fishing for crabs, oyster, shrimp and other marine life in waters affected by the spill. The fishing closure, largely covering an area between Louisiana state waters at the mouth of the Mississippi River and waters off Florida’s Pensacola Bay, will apply for at least 10 days.

To my understanding they are employing some of the watermen to help with the clean up. Unfortunately there isn't enough jobs to go around.

Well it's starting up here. A local seafood retail shop was on the news today. He was sorting through crabs and then made the comment that "These are the last from the Gulf area that he could get" He noticed that the price is going up for him.
I never seen any deals from him over the past few years. His normal price for #1 Maryland crabs is $240.00 to $260.00 a bushel over the summer.

He can KEEP those bushels for $260.00. The most I ever paid was $200.00 and that about killed me but I had to have a bushel for a feast..........Gary
