Wow!!! Just back back from Newfoundland from Hunting Woodland Caribou and Moose. It was a great trip the outfitter was fantasic ( Owls Nest Lodge) and I had a great guide. The first day seen about 60 Woodland caribou in two large groups. The stags gather up the does and fend off on-comers. We managed to make a stalk on one group of about 20-30 does and it had a large stag (they call them stags there not bulls) and managed to harvest a large Woodland Caribou they told me it was an exceptional animal first one! trying to compare it with something. Later in the week was able to take a young bull Moose too!. It was a trip to remember! We walked an average of 10 -12 miles a day in bogs and mountains glassing for animals!. Here are some pictures of them.
The Caribou was the longest shot I have ever made on an animal he said it was around 375 yards. My rifle was set for 200 yards and has a drop of 19 inches at 400. One shot through both lungs. Caribou did not go anywhere walked in a half circle then fell.
Moose was 275 looked farther than the caribou aimed high and shot over his back on the first shot then the guide said I told you 250- 275! listened this time placed second shot right behind the shoulder dropped with in 50 yards of second shot double lunged him. Good food and great time!
