Wicomico River at Bushwood May 09, 2010

It was a very windy day. Gale warning is not a joke. The wind was blowing at 20-27knots constantly until 4:30PM. The waves weren't high because Wicomico River at Bushwood Wharf is a small (compare to Chesapeake Bay). I did not catch any striped bass. But conducted a good test on Cooked Shrimps as Croaker Bait.

Tested if cooked shrimps are as good as raw shrimps for croakers. It turned out, amazingly, that, peeled and cooked, small salad shrimps out-performed raw shrimps in croaker fishing. Because 34 croakers caught were small (11-15 inches), I can't definitely say Cooked Shrimp is better than raw shrimp. Bigger croakers may like raw shrimps over cooked shrimps.

Here is the test result:

Joe,
I'm glad you still went down to Bushwood, I was hoping my report didn't discouarge you. Looks like you found the Croakers too! Thats just too much wind and chop for me Buddy! Thanks for sharing the video. Even though the Severn is so much closer for me and the Croaker are up here now, I may still try Bushwood one more time.

Mike

p.s. don't forget about me when the Flounder come in to Cornfield Harbor!!

Looks like you and your Hobie ruled the day, that area is usually full of boats when croakers are in. I really enjoy your videos. If you don't mind me asking, what camera do you use and what software to add text? Great report.

captain,
I use Nikon S200. It cost $140 few years ago. 7M pixel photo and 640X480 video image. Though I spent almost $200 for under-water camera housing. But I use these when I scuba-diving/free-diving.

Almost all Nikon, Canon, Olympus, Sony cameras come with underwater housing.

If you google you can find good digital cameras.

Here is things you need to know:

1.GoPro HD camera is good. But the still pictures are not good. It recycles pic or image names so it can overlay the old files if you replace the battery. Also it does not have the view screen. That is very bad.
2.I prefer cameras made by real camera companies, not Samsung, Not Sony.
3.The battery should last over 30 minutes for Video. I think 640X480 resolution is minimum requirement. HD is not quite required.
4.The camera must accept (recognize) a 8gb memory card. Many cameras still can not recognize the memory card larger than 2gb. If you take a week vacation you probably need 8gb.
5.I prefer camera accept SD card. SD card is cheaper.
6.If you are alone, You need a cheap helmet (half sphere shape). Mine is $10.00 kid helmet. Strap is not good because it takes too long to wear it and position the camera. I turn the video on and wear the Helmet (half sphere shape). Many times I don't buckle the strap because I did not have that much time.

I use free software called movie maker provided on XP and Windows7. It is very easy to use it. But there are limits.

See if you can find the under-water camera housing for the camera you currently own.

Captain,
I don't know how you will use the camera. If you don't dive you don't need an underwater camera. Olympus makes several waterproof camera at under $200.00. if it takes a 2gb memory card and over 20min of battery life then it will be good. If you go on vacation, dump the files to your lab top or carry few 2gb memory cards.

Thanks for the info Joe. My wife gave me the gopro hd for Christmas, but haven't been anywhere to try it yet. Looks like the next two weekends are reserved for travel, so maybe I'll get out in June.
