HEY GUYS......OK, this is gonna be a little long winded but I'll give ya the whole story.
First off thanks for helpiong with the photo's Mike!
Got a call form a freind who invites me to hunt on his farm. Sure! Arrive about 3:15pm after racing home to shower and grab gear. We got to talking and he said he had two stands I could hunt from, an oak flat surrounded by thickets or the corner of a corn feild were he's been seeing 10-15 deer an evening, or take my climber. I say I'm planning on doing some rattling so I'll take the thicket. He escorts me to the trail head, and instructs me that the stand is about 100yds in.
Upun arriving I place to scent whicks according to the wind. Let the woods settle down a bit, and then let out a few grunts in case any deer were close. About 10 mins later I start my first rattling sequence. Nothing. About 15mins later the wind switched, and any buck worth his salt that would be circling downwind would proabbly get a whiff of me before the scent whicks. I made the decision to get down and move the whicks in accordance to the new winds, THIS PAID OFF BIG TIME. As the afternoon passed I continue my rattling grunting sequences. About 4:30? I hear something behing be but the understory canopy hasn't even dropped yet so I can't see a thing and really wasn't sure about the sound to begin with. I let out a little grunt, nothing. About 5-6 mins later I give "whatever" it is a seductive estrus bleat, 2x. HERE HE COMES. I still can't make much out other than it's a racked deer and coming behind me. As soon as that slob got a whiff of the scent which he made a B-lone for it. When he cleared the understory at about 15yds to my left at about he 7 O'clock postion, I was already at full draw in case he was a shooter. At this point he was walking with a steady gate I was waiting for the quarting away shot. Just a few more steps. I was shaking like a leaf and was SO NERVOUS something would go wrong. Still at full draw, this bruiser (for whatever reason) decides to make a hard right toward me. I realease the arrrow at about 8yds, from 20' up. ....THIS IS WHEN IT GOT BAD....I hear a bow hunters worse nightmare, a loud snap/crack sound. The buck trots off but not too alarmed. I can barely see him at 35 yds, and then he takes a few steps and I loose him. I'm practically shakin, hyperventalating and trying to reply the events. I KNOW I SCREWED UP..[this is true]....I didn't follow through on the shot and lifted my head to see/watch the impact....rookie mistake.... even though I've been bowhunting over 10 yrs. Then I make another rookie mistake, .....since I can't see my arrow and I heard that awfull sound I get down to check. Were still talking a total of about 2-3 mins since I shot. I see no arrow, I'm looking in logs, stumps, tree's....anything that the arrow could of hit and been the reason for that sound. As I'm looking I catch a tail flicker out of the corner of my eye about 35-40yds away, I FREEZE! I focus on the deer thinking how can I get back up the tree to get my bow, ANOTHER ROOKIE MISTAKE. I'm standing there trying to be still and watching this statue of a deer, thinking all along that I wiffed on the biggest deer of my life. Then it happens, this brute starts to do the whiskey waltz........legs shaking and wobbling, back wavering and head bobbing, HE'S GOING DOWN!!!!!!!
I get back in the stand and wait about 10-15mins, which was the smartest thing I've done on the last 5mins. I guess big bucks make you do dumb things. At this poiint I stll don't know my head from my arse, all I wanna do is scream, jump, anything to let out my excitment. I get down and walk over to him, and there was no ground shrinkage......what a brute. Grabbed my bow and pack and take that to the head of the trail. I came back for the chore of draggin it to the trail head for loading, now about 140yds away. It didn't take as long as I thought it would, or maybe I just don't remember? Went back to house, shared the info and we got the ATV and afew cold ones. We loaded him up on the gator and took him to another area and dressed him out. Oh yah that awfull sound I heard must of been his ribs cracking/breaking becasue I put a good shot on him.
19.5" inside spread, 20.5" outside, 11" G 2's, 9" G 3's, 6" brows with one split brow tine, He also has to cool loooking little stickers off the base that proceed forward about 3/4". He's got 4 on one side, 5 on the other and the split brow. As impressive as his headgear was I found it even more astonishing that he DRESSED OUT AT 205lb on the button......I guess about 240 on the hoof?
Oh ya, first time I've ever been invited to hunt this farm, guess I won't be back any time soon! [grin]

Bill, no doubt brother. This has been over ten years in the making and I finally got a book deer. Some of you guys may remember I kept a little miniature of Jim Beam in glove box for this celebration. Well the Beam has been long gone, I think Burgess drank it. But the dream was still going until last night. Thanks for all the replys.
Thanks

just kidding! Congrats again. way to keep your composure out there, and give him time to die. Maybe next time you could rig a tarzan swing from the tree, so you can get down faster. [grin]

I got faith in all you guys,[excited] I've been waiting, trying, WORKING, so long for this caliber of deer. I've had several very close calls and other circumstances out of my control but it fianlly worked out...... it could be as simple as a phone call from a freind and everything falls into place. Hopefully, this is just the begining of a great season. Good luck guys!
