98 Rock. LOL I aint gonna say much on this, but most of the crap you hear over the horn is BS talk. If you want to hear it for shits and giggles thats fine but don't take any info at face value. No important info gets sent out over open air. ;-)

I rarely hear anyone on there, besides static.

I normally don't turn mine on, unless I need an update on the weather.

Most fishermen stay on 68 but on weekends there's nothing but bad language and trash on the radio. Most valuable info is passed along via cell phone now. A VHF is good for weather and emergencies. I have never heard any channel that crabbers stay on.................Gary

When I'm on top of really good fish, I like to tell people how great I'm doing. Then give a fake location in the opposite direction from where I am. Then watch all the boats in the bay zip to that location. :)

OK...not really, but sometimes I wonder if other people don't do this. No one in their right mind gives out real good information for every jackleg to hear. :)

Absolutely people do this.................think about how many people are monitoring that radio. If you are on good fishing, are you really going to alert everyone your exact coordinates.

The only reason i know this is because i was fishing outside the mouth of the little choptank on a good school of breaking rockfish. Another boat was there with me and i saw him get on the radio and announce, breaking rockfish just south of poplar island. True - we were south of poplar.....but more like 8 - 10 miles south.

I have a hand held also
but I can never listen to it becuz if I actually remember to bring it with me, the battery is usually dead, If I remember to take it ashore to charge it, I usually forget to bring it with me, if I leave it on the boat I usually forget to turn it off,

I find a permanent mount VHF a much better solution, In the upper Bay GP, Bush ,,I usually am on the APG channel (68)

I also have a hand held VHF that I do not use any more. The rechargeable battery is no longer any good and a replacement for it costs more than a new hand held radio. I find the range of hand helds is very lacking. I had a permanent VHF mounted in my boat, but recently removed it. I had a lot of motor interference when I transmitted and it was difficult for the listener to understand what I was saying. The interference might be caused by the outboard's ignition system or a defective circuit in the radio itself. Regardless, I found that my cell phone was a much, much more reliable form of communication. With my grand kids aboard I would not turn on my VHF. Way too many foul mouths hiding behind their microphone.
