Anyone know if there is a rule of thumb when using a 5 gallon bucket as opposed to an actual bushel basket?? Like, say, 1 1/2 - 5 gallon buckets equals a bushel basket? Thanks.

No rule of thumb that I'm aware of...BUT it better be a very well ventilated bucket or most likely all you'll have is dead crabs after a day of crabbing. Just stop by a crab dealer or seafood market and ask for one if you can't buy one.

If the man comes to check you out, and you try to tell him that 1 1/2 or any number of 5 gallon buckets equals a bushel, you may be on the recieving end of a citation !! Make life alot easier and get yourself a bushel basket.

A wooden bushel basket has an 8 gallon capacity.
Your guess is as good as mine on the bucket.crazyloco

Just use a bushel basket to hold your crabs and avoid problems.
