Hi,
Been lurking here for a couple of years now and have finally decided to get serious about crabbing this year. I saw a post with pictures on a crab trap float design that had pvc "handles" and was weighted on one end to help in collecting the traps. Could someone please re-post the instructions and specifically how/what to weight the ends with. Using a pool noodle but just need to know the best way to construct the "handle" portion of the float and how to attach to the trap.
Tried to search but no pictures show up.
Thanks in advance....good luck this season.

I made some last week and they work great. I used a foot of pool noodle then cut a 2 foot section of pvc and put it throught the middle of the noodle. I melted some lead and poured some in the pvc. I test floated each one to make sure they floated vertical. I then drilled a hole to attach the trap line to the float. Pretty easy. I think for two dozen floats, I have about $20 invested. They really stick out when there are a bunch of other float around.

A large pool noodle has a diameter of 3 1/2 inches with a 1 1/4 inch opening. You can use a 1 inch PVC piece to put through the noodle and extend it about 6 inches on one end.You should probably use an adhesive to secure the PVC inside the noodle. You can pour lead into the bottom end of the pipe or use another method. Do this before placing inside noodle. I use 1/8 inch line to attach to trap as it is easier on the hands. It should float handle up. Hope this is of some help............Gary

My method is very crude and was developed when I was enjoying a few cold ones working in the shed one evening pouring deocy weights....but here ya go.........take your PVC and stuff a gumball (tree not candy) in one end and then pour hot lead down the other end, works great. :nerd:

LOL !!! How many things have been "invented" while enjoying a few cold ones???..... I was in my garage late last night "inventing" and enjoying some cheap whiskey. Maybe I'll post a picture or two.... maybe not on second thought....

Just remember to put your last name on every one of them so it wont wash off easily. Last year I got a warning because the sharpie had worn off on a few of mine. It was something like a $95 dollar fine

PM me your # again Anthony, my old phone took a dump and lost a lot of #'s. Yes, bright and early Sat am.
I went to a snood line this year and made a "shield" inside my net to avoid tangles... Gallon milk jug and some wire ties.... Looked good when I made it ( a few whiskies in me), have not had the nerve to go look at it since LOL
Thanks.

1//4" heavy duty sceening works good too.....but I suspect the whiskey was in the plastic jug so it made more sense......at the time:))

I use donut floats and a piece of 3/4 pvc, I dont put a weight on one side, I just drill a hole and put my rope through the hole.
The hole is slightly big enough that it allows for water to be the weight, it works great for me!

For those who like to complicate things, go ahead and melt lead and cut and drill PVC. But in the end, a float is just a float. Years ago, I bought a few of those bullet shape crab pot floats, sliced them into 4ths with a mitre saw. Still good as new and easy enough to wrapp the line around for storage.
