How's this for a nightmare.

If a strong enough hurricane hits in the Gulf - it could suck up the oil off the surface of the ocean and carry it inland in the clouds and then drop it as an oily rain :eek2::eek2:.

It is a long shot to happen but the prediction is for more then normal hurricanes this year.
Most hit the Gulf in August - hopefully the oil leak is stopped by then,

As far fetched as that seems it's not that unlikely a scenario....
All you have to do is look at all the reports of tornados moving over lakes and ponds and then raining fish and frogs down miles from any body of water.

:hysterical:Maybe if we can get the oil slick widespread enough, it will have a positive (meaning negative) effect on hurricane formation. Maybe leaking wells everywhere would ensure us very mild hurricane seasons.

Oil sux for so many reasons but if it's the only thing you know and it has made you wealthy in the process and you only care about today and our generation, it's great

Jim,

Just for kicks....can you post pics of all your electric (or man powered) boats and cars? Do you bike to work? How about everything that you use that is transported via trucks, planes etc, or is processed using that dreaded old oil...........yeah everyone uses quite a bit more oil then they want to admit.

all ad hominem all the time

Wow, the disturbance in the Force has been corrected. I found myself agreeing with C-hawk on a crabbing board post, but now he is back to his old tricks.

BTW, I have a canoe with an electric motor that I use sometimes (sorry, I am not posting a picture,: you just have to take my word for it), and I work from home so my commuting impacts have been markedly decreased. So I am doing my part in a small way.

I will also commit heresy by saying that I wish we were paying a price for petroleum-based product that was truly reflective of the actual cost. That way, we might collectively decide to look at energy alternatives, or even.....gasp.....conservation.

But then again, I wish we were paying Perdue more for chicken so its true cost would be visible. Of course, as part of that bargain, Perdue would have to be responsible for the environmental impacts of its products.

if there were no C-Hawks, I would have very few friends with whom to fish and crab. LOL but true.

I can relate to that. There's still probably a good reason for people to avoid using personal, "ad hominem" responses in these discussions. Once it starts in that direction, it almost never comes back to a reasonable, constructive discussion. Look at this thread. Once it went ad hominem, it ends with people attacking and defending eachother. FWIW, ad hominem is a class of logical fallacies. "Your opinion about the oil spill is invalid because you rely on fossil fuel" is classic ad hominem.

It's still cultural. Efficiency is nice, but we really drive too much unnecessarily. Look how many families don't cook anymore-they're all running out to Applebee's or some such corporate slop. Here in Bel Air, every place like that is packed 7 nights a week. If gas cost what it should, folks would change their ways, I bet. But- it seems that whenever gas prices go up, folks act all socialist and the pols yell and scream at the oil companies about the hardship thier constituents are enduring. Bullshit. If gas $$ for your commute is eating you up, get a smaller car, or a more efficient one, or carpool. I95 into Baltimore backs up to my exit(74, Joppa) every morning with 1 person cars. That's insanity. My toys(RV, muscle car) are lucky to see 8 mpg on a good day. So what. They're toys, fer chrissake. The RV might see 2000 miles a year, the car even less. Gas could go to $10 a gallon and it would not effect my use of those toys. But I would damn sure be driving a tiny diesel or equivelent to work every day. Too many folks on the road, there could be much, much less driving.
