I have a good quality minn kota trolling motor which mounts on the bow of my 198 Carolina skiff. It has the co-pilot feature and works great for fishing in lakes for stripers. I plan on fishing in the Corrotaman River area the last week of this month for vacation. It would be great to be able to use it for inshore casting, which I plan on doing a lot of that week. My question is, will I be risking damaging it in salt water? Any suggestios would be greatly appreciated.:help:
Mako,
My Minn Kota Endura, bottom-of-the-line model is only 3 ys old so this is limited information. Brand new, I wiped the "Lower Unit" down with solvent and sprayed 3 coats of Derusto, intentionally filling all the seams and joints that seem to be the first point of corrosion. Tape off the prop shaft -- grease it, no paint wanted there. So far, it looks like the day I painted it and only more time will tell if it will do any good. It is used exclusively in the marshes and rivers of the lower Chesapeake Bay -- about as salty as the bay gets.
This is only my second electric troller, so my experience is limited.
Good luck,
budc

tHANKS budc for the info. I contacted minn kota by phone and spoke to someone in there technical support team. Beacause the model I have has the built in sonar they highly reccomended not using it in saltwater at all. Electrolysis and corosion could cause quick failure. If it didn't have the sonar feature he said it would work. Thanks again for the reply, MAKOBIRD
