Walked down to the inner harbor yesterday for lunch. Behind the Power Plant where the Coast Guard Cutter sits, I looked down and couldn't believe my eyes. The water was CLEAR! So clear you could see the trash and cans sitting on the bottom about 8-10' down. I saw a very large school of 3-5" bait fish and what appeared to be a 18-20 in rock swimming around. Then I looked against the bulk head wall, and saw a crabs everywhere! These crabs were extra large and hanging all over the place. I couldn't believe it... The water clarity and large crabs was a first for me down at the inner harbor.

I walked from canton to fells yesterday along the pathway and I could not believe the number of small crabs .5-2in that were swimming around. I saw numerous pods of bait and deveral large groups of fish that looked like perch swimming in circles. While I did not see the clarity your speaking of signs of life were everywhere even around the oil sheen and trash.

We need to voice our concerns at the proper DNR meetings in addition to complaining on the boards. It is getting better but the minute you let go, is when the crabs and fish will go. We need more than a few year moritorium on female crabs and might have to fight to get it. Don't relax........keep up the pressure..........Gary

About 10 years ago I was in Fells Point with my then little kids. We we at the foot of Broadway across from the tugboats. For the first I ever saw the water was clear and you could see to the bottom. We did not see any crabs but we saw about 4-6 rockfish that looked like about 14" - 20". Anyone know what causes these freak periods of water clarity?

i think when it doesn't rain for weeks, the water will get clear.
but after this monsoon today, it will get cloudy again.
i know grass will also help clear it up

what moritouium on female crabs are you talking about. there are catch restricions in place for the last 2 years but all comm are allowed a limited catch of females. another thing if the rockfish are on the decline it's from the winter rec. fishery in VA and NC, 2 bredders per day per person is too much this needs to be cut to 1 fish per person per day.
