we save our ducks/geese after breasting them so we can put them out @ night w/ a long line running to the house, through an open window, tied off to some beer cans. every now & then we give a dying rabbit call (made of 2 popcicle sticks w/ saran wrap between them held together w/ duct tape on the ends). play cards drinking beer & when you hear the cans rattling, grab your gun. [grin]

Is night hunting fox legal in MD?

It can be a lot of fun. I have used electronic callers with fox pup tape (cottontail nest works good to) and had most of my success. Use the red lights and the larger bird shot like 4's, 2's, BB's or BBB's. Foxes will run right up to the caller just sit about 10 yards off of it. ***Make sure if you are not hunting your own land to have written permission from the land onwer to predator call at night.***

I've been having great success with greys, but not many reds. Greys come running right in most of the time. Fox hunting is easier for me in the fall than the late winter. I use a home made wireless caller with an MP3 player. My most successful recording is a mix I put together of two greys fighting and a red fox distress. You wouldn't believe how and sounds and also how many foxes will come in at once when you first blast it. Second best is grey fox pup, but in late winter, I find that a wood****** or flicker distress works real well at very low volumes. If they hang up at a distance, swith to lip squeaking or a rodent distress so low that you can barely hear from 15 ft. I don't hunt in fields. Instead, I usually get just inside the field edge and call into the woods. If you use a red lense, keep it on the entire time while holding it just within the halo of the light and slowly work it back and forth. If you don't have a red lense, turn off your light and look for the darkest tree to sit. Don't turn on the light until they are within range. (It's actually more exciting like this and gets your heart pounding as they're coming in! I use a 12 ga with high brass 6. No need for larger pellets and have shot many with low brass from 7 1/2 within 25 yds. I also use my 17 hmr, which punches a huge exit hole for a 17gr bullet! I will try to post some pics.

Yeah the shotgun works great, especially those running shots, but I love shooting them with a .204, now that does a number on them. I am still waiting for the yote to come in a snuff him. I need to charge my stuff up and get out and do some calling. I have called them up during the daytime, mostly overcast days. Shot one grey about 10 yds once that I called up with a mouth caller. Exactly what my brother said with the permission of land owners, thats the rule in VA.

The .204 is definately the perfect varmit rifle for this area! Something else to add if you really want to make it interesting. Set the caller down at your feet or use a mouth call as stated above. I had a fox run up and stop on the back side of the tree I was beside. I could actually hear him panting! I've also had a couple stick their nose in the cone of the speaker when turned down real low.
