Was wondering what length is best for the snoods when making a snood line? Either the cut length of the bungee of the length of the snood once it's attached would be helpful.

Thanks.

I try to achieve a 6" drop from the line once bait is attached.

When I make snoods for customers Ii generally cut the bungee at 12" - after all the burning, knotting, and tying to the trotline the end result is about a 5-6" snood. Making them much longer than that sometimes makes it hard to see the crab coming up on the bait especially if you use an eight inch baitbag as well.

my preference is about the same as everyone else 4-6" for the finished product.

The shorter the better.
Just long enough to get the bait in.
Long snoods can cause problems when deploying the line.

What everyone above said is RIGHT ON!!!!!!

I cut 12" lengths of bungee and end up with a 6" drop from the bottom of the main line to the center of the noose when it is tightened on the bait.

Longer lengths (drops) tend to cause more tangles and snags.
Some folks cut bungee as long as 16". I started with that length years ago. Switched to 14" length, then to 12" where I will remain. It works well for most of us.

Drop length is determined to an extent by the diameter of the main line and the type of knot used.

What Jerry is trying to say is..."It depends on the angle of the dangle" - and he is right !!!

I believe that's Gary's line, not mine.

It's not the size of the ship, it's the motion of the ocean!...........Gary

If you are going on a short trip 40 ft. is recommended, if you plan to stay near the coast or an inlet, a 20 ft boat will do okay, but for the really long trips 50 -60+ ft. The size of a boat is more important in relation to the type of water and weather you will be taking it out in than whether it will be used in the ocean or freshwater. For instance, a small boat with a flat hull will be better for use in shallow water, in areas that have reefs, and in calm weather. If you will be using the boat in deep water only, something with a deeper hull will allow use in somewhat inclement weather. A larger boat will generally be more stable, and capable of carrying more goods necessary for longer trips.

Concerning motion in the ocean, safety depends less on the size of the boat than the equipment carried in it. Regardless of whether or not you will be going out of sight of land, you should always carry items like a spare canister of fuel, clean drinking water, a toolkit to perform basic engine repair (i.e. spark plugs, etc.) and a method of attracting attention, for instance a flare gun designed to float and work even when wet. If you are planning on venturing beyond sight of land, you should have additional items such as maps and a compass (and be trained in navigating), a two-way radio, a life raft, and additional provisions. Your boat should be big enough to fit everything you need for safety comfortably

Jerry - Iced tea.

ps - The angle of the dangle is proportional to the bootie of the cutie and the heat of the meat...causes the size of the rise

Now you are back on track Jim. Thought we lost you for a while there. Must have been the heat. Keep a cool tool jewel, I'm wise to that rise in you Levi's:peace:.................Gary
