Do you go crabbing prepared for unexpected eventualities as well as you can?
I try to minimize the effects of mishaps that eventually come my way as they do to all of us at some point in time. Nothing can ruin a day like not having the right tools or a spare tire or a back-up net, etc.

Sooooooooooooooo, what steps do you take to ensure the least amount of down time when you go on a crabbing trip? List some of them on this thread to help those of us who have not or do not take these things into consideration simply because they have not had something unfortunate happen to them.

Things I take along on every crabbing trip:
Spare trailer tire
Spare hub for trailer pre loaded with grease
Spare trot line weights and floats
Extra snap clips
Spare gas tank with fuel
Tool kit for tow vehicle
Tool kit on boat
Flashlight
Spare bulbs for nav lights
Spare crab measuring gage
Spare kill switch key
Extra O/B motor key
Spark plugs for O/B motor
Spare battery and jumper cables
2 dip nets always
2 pair culling gloves
Extra rope
More food and drink than I think I'll need
Complete change of clothes
First aid kit
WD-40
O/B motor oil
5 gallon bucket & baby wipes
Sunscreen
Extra Money
Experienced dipper

I'm certain there's more.
Add to this list what you take along that helps keep your trip from becoming a failure in the event of a mishap or SNAFU.

That's a lot of stuff Jerry. I don't take near that stuff but the most important is sunscreen, enough water to drink and some bleach to put on cuts and scrapes to prevent infections. Most of that other stuff will protect from boating or crabbing failure but these protect life! When you take me, the experienced dipper is more than covered. dancedance. Good list but what about a spare starter:eek2:...........Gary.

Jerry, if I took one fifth of that, I would have to tow a dingy to carry it all in !! My boat is only 16 ft. long ! Dean

Jerry- I like the 5 gallon bucket and baby wipes idea!! I'll never forget the morning we were headed up the river and my bro was gonna foul 1 of my bushel baskets! Luckily he got stage fright and couldn't get the job done! :eek2::hysterical:
Let me know if you ever need the "experienced dipper" part, i've dipped a couple and even show up with baited t-lines.

I learned a LONG time ago to keep a list of what to bring each time I go on the garage wall and damned if I don't always forget something - that list has saved the day many times - It works for fishing and duck hunting too!

When I'm about to leave I always take an extra minute to review that list - it's almost funny but it works. Now........if....I......could just find

the list!

cell phone in a zip lock bag with enough air to float it

I always take two 6-mil plastic trash bags to make a liner for the bucket, and zip ties, just in case I need to use the bucket more than once...........don't want to leave my mark on the river.........dispose of bag at home ! !

Jerry, tools are a given: pliers, wrenches, screwdrivers, volt meter is nice, electrical tape, a nice sharp knife, etc. Cell phone is a must. I just got stranded last week on my Pro-line at night. My darn shifter stopped working. Just curious how many have trusty ole' Boat US towing, have to say it is well worth the annual fee.
