Bought a bushel of crabs from a retailer in Rockville last week. 1st thing I noticed when I took the lid off to check it was that it was short. The top of the bushel had 3” left until it was full however the crabs looked great with larges on top. I asked how many were in the bushed and they said 5 to 6 dozen. I thought with large crabs that’s not too far off. So I paid the man. Got home and after the top layer was in the steamer, the rest of t he crabs were small to mediums. I called and complained and was told that the bushels are sold as they are bought from the wholesaler.

I will be in the Chesapeake Beach/Breezy Point area Saturday am and wanted to know if somebody could recommend a place to purchase some crabs without feeling like I was ripped off. A Dock side transaction with cash would be great as well.
Looking to purchase 2 bushels of #1 or larges.
Thanks George

Unless you know the crab dealer and buy from him on a regular basis, that's what you are going to get. Every one has their own idea of what a large crab is too. Buying direct from the crabber is the way to go but is not always possible. The crabber has his regular orders to fill from his steady buyers and will give them the best crabs. That's just the nature of the business. If the crabs are truly large you will have 60 crabs a bushel. I can give you the name and number of a crabber that sells a bushel of proper #1's around the area. Capt. Dale Griffith 301-233-6832............Gary

I have heard of people weighing a bushel of crabs to know if they are worth the money. Maybe someone can chime in and say what they should average.

We cull every bushel in front of the customer unless they are in a rush. That deal you got is how you lose business quick. Fluffing a basket is BS. Just sell what you advertise and you will have no crabs left at the end of the day! JMHO

Buy TF crabs and you wont go wrong.

Dale,Polecat(Jerry), Bayhead (Chuck), RJ(Rich) , Bowmovements (I love that handle), JBCrabs, and others I neglected to mention. You cant go wrong within the TF Crab Board Crew.
The big thing is to try to plan when you need the crabs so they can try to accomodate your needs.
Sometimes last minute works and other times not.

I need a beer. Buy for now.
