We got down to Corolla mid day on Sat. and while the crew was anxious to build sand castles Dad was anxious to fish! Our rentl was right on the beach just before the 4x4 area. The wind has been blowing SW for a bit now and the water was to say the least, Chilly. I stopped at the bait shop and the guy suggested BWs. He said they were catching Flounder, Spot and an occasional puppy drum. I got som BWs and some squid and set out to the beach with my tandem rig w/ 4oz. the blood worms worked alright and I was soon reeling in small croaker, ~8-10inches. This was the norm for the first 3 days. We took the kayak out and fished the back side of the breakers with the same result. However, as we drifted a little further out we ran into non stop puppy drum, all ~10-16inches. Fished every morning and every dusk with the same result except for 1 15 flounder. We also caught Spot up to 13 inches!
Went out Monday night with some fish heads as bait looking to catch a shark. Well the beer was cold and the lightning storm was impressive 'til it chased us off the beach. But not before a knockdown and a little screaming of the reel. when I got to the pole it was gone. Oh well. Did hear of a "big fish" caught up the beach but my cousin didn't know what it was. Just that there was high 5's and cheers from the on-lookers.
All in all it was a fun week with a lot of little fish caught in the surf, we return in Sept to Nags head and will be looking to increase the size. I'm also bringing the boat and studying the charts 'til then.
