Bringing my 17 Mako down with me to Nags Head in Sept. Does anyone have any suggestions on ramps in or around the Nags Head area? I plan on fishing back country (although I'm clueless where to go) looking for Reds, specks and whatever else I can find. If the weather permits I would also like to explore around OI. So, any suggestions on ramps or any advice?
Thanks in Advance
Mike

Oregon Inlet fishing center has the best facilities around www.oregon-inlet.com bait tackle ice, ramps plenty of parking etc... There are several small ramps along the sound from KDH down to Nags Head, but I am un familiar with them.

Theres a public ramp as soon as you cross over the bridge leaving Nags Head going towards Manteo on the left. Puts you right out in the sound and OI is about 11 miles south of there. Plenty of decent action around Wanchese area especially what you are targeting. Good Luck

Nicest ramp is just before the Oregon INlet on the right. Jusdt remember to have a NC fishing license PER PERSON. I dont thionk they do boat licenses like we have in Va.

Thanks for the advice, we plan on getting the NC "short term license" 10 day. Any other advice, such as areas that are fishy (reds and specks) and what has been working? Again, never fished the area and looking for any suggestions.

Fished OI on Monday, Tuesday and Wed 26, 27 and 28 July. Blues are very plentiful both in the bay and near shore. They are on the small side, but lots of actions when you run into em. Been catching them by trolling small clark spoons on long leader. Flounder has also been active, but most are under the size limit - been catching them with squid and small minnows combinations. Croker and Spot can be found around piers and the pilings of the inlet bridge and have been biting on shrimp and bloodworms. Weather has been good the last week and offshore fishing has picked up quite a bit. Offshore, folks have been catching Mahi and tuna. Went out to the C tower and saw some really big amberjack, but couldn't buy a bit. They were there, but seemed to be suffering from lockjaw. If you make the run out to the tower, make sure you have the right bait which (at least in my mind) would be spot or small croker. Have had reports of Red Drum off the beach areas, but haven't heard much with regards to specks. All in all, been having a very good week while on vacation down here at Nags Head. Whale Bone Tackle has been very helpful with lots of good tips - Shawn is a very plesant kid to talk to - recommend you check in there to see what the latest is.

Like posted, try OI, it is a great ramp. You got the public ramp across the road from Pirates cove marina, public ramp in downtown manteo, public ramp in Wanchese next to the fishermans wharf rest. Any of thease should work for ya.
All depends on if you want to spend money on boat gas or truck gas to pull the boat. Try by the Manns Harbor bridge, you can probably get some nice rockfish. Heard of the reds swimming on the coast too but haven't talked to anyone who has actually caught one. Good Luck !
