We caught (probably snagged) this in the Assawoman Bay today. Looks like one big shrimp but didn't know anything like this even existed anywhere.

That's a Mantis Shrimp.

They can give you a nasty blow , def. a mantis shrimp. They don't actually bite they punch there prey to death or to the point of being compleatly disabled. They are also known as thumb splitters, becasue they have blunt force power estimated to be equal to a .22 rimfire. When an unsespecting diver or fisherman trys to handle one and the shrimp strikes it can litterally split the skin on your fingertips.

I have found them whole inside flounder. I have used them for bait and they work really well...Just be very careful...gloves are a must, even better if you don't have to handle them at all....

Yeah for some reason, that thing looked nasty. Note I was holding it with a hook remover and then hung it over the side to shake it off.

Had flounder spit them out on deck, hooked them up and caught more flounder. GOOD BAIT! But be careful like they said, saw them buried in a hole snorklin in Hawaii. Guide said they can shoot that spike thru your flipper if you step on them and ruin your trip!

SORRY FOR BLURRY PIX not an expert with disposable underwater camera

They are common in the Bay. Striper spit them up all time in the fall.
