Fellow Tfer Vaughn and my dad went with me today. We left Sandy Point at 5:30 - just as it got light enough to see. My dad is 83 - Vaughn is around 80 - great being the " youngster " at 46. Between Vaughn and my dad - some serious fishing experience was on the boat.

Tide was very high at the ramp and still rising. We ran SE to Mattapeake and found a light chop. Looked around near the crab pot line and soon saw fish tight on bottom in 15 feet. Dropped anchor and put over fresh bloodworms. Did not take long for the two elders to start bailing Spot. I gave up trying to fish - instead , just removed Spot and baited hooks. Most were a touch smaller then we like but enough of the premium size ( 6 inchers ) were in the livewell to almost ensure a limit of Rock. Ran up to the bridge but nothing happening. Worked up to Sewer Pipe and saw a few charters leaving after only about 15 minutes. Bad sign that nothing there either. Incoming current was slowing - time was not our friend today.

The current prediction at Sandy Point showed slack at 8:45 - so we figured to go over that way and see if we could find fish - then fish them on the out going current. We zig zagged along the 20 to 25 foot edge between Sandy Point and Podickery and noticed jellyfish being carried south. Odd , current was predicted to be slack - end of incoming. I might not be the sharpest tack - but I know better then to look a gift horse in the mouth. We found a few blips down 10 feet and anchored up current of them. The south breeze had died and our stern pointed south. Current slowly increased and then was rolling nice - at 8:30.

Dad and Vaughn drifted Spot back on 1/0 hooks with 1/4 and 3/8 weights. Did not take long before Vaughn had a fish. My dad netted it and we had our first keeper - about 22 inches.

Dad got one about 20 and then I got a hit. Fish fought funny and I had a feeling I knew why. Sure enough - a fish full of sores.

That sucked but the next few fish were nice and healthy looking. No big ones - just fat 20 to 23 inchers.
We had 5 in the box in about 30 minutes. The bite was really fast - if the Spot was drifted back correctly.

We found dropping it beside the boat - then allowing roughly 30 feet of line out - wait until felt Spot twitch - then let out line in 5 to 10 foot increments. Often after 3-4 let outs - THUMP - fish was biting.

Heard a weird theory that I'm starting to believe. The livewell discharge draws Rock to the boat. Sounds crazy but the bite did get faster and closer to the stern. The Spot sure poop out a lot - perhaps the scent draws the Rock in.

With 5 in the box - we were down to the smaller Spot and sure enough - getting just legal fish. All were lipped hooked so they were let go in the water. Vaughn hooked up something better and soon number 6 was iced for our limit. It was just 10:00 and the bay was flat.

Saw a few sailboats motor by - they had to be hating the lack of wind. We started to as well - it was getting hot fast so we pulled anchor and ran back in.

My dad and I each gave Vaughn one of our fish - I almost felt sorry for the fish. Today , the deck was stacked against them with that much experience on the boat.

I got a good laugh when I went to clean my dad's and my fish. Last night at PSG - got my knives sharpened by B and B. His work is top notch - knives are sharp as new.

He put some Band - Aids in the box with the newly sharpened knives. Good laugh there.
