Caught a BLUE crab this AM. Actually caught it twice. The entire crab was bright powder blue except for the underside which was white.

Another crabber near me took a picture. Not sure if he monitors this site.

BTW- I wasn't crabbing the Patapsco.:D

You can see one at the Wildlife reserve/park something like that off of muddy creek road.. Its amazing what clear water wil do to a blue crab... Come to think of it, all the ones we catch in Florida near New Port Ritchie are all blue instead of green.

I have only ever seen one of the "powder blue" crabs you are referring to once and that was this year. Strange???

It's a genetic variation, not related to water clarity.

http://wrclarkepix.shutterfly.com/707Not powder blue but almost electric blue that this picture doen't do justice to. We caught these in the Coto Colorado River in Zancudo, Costa Rica. We've been going for years but never saw any crabs until fishing from a dock one day and one crawled by. Nobody catches them and nobody eats them. At least not in this little beach front village. We made a very rough crab pot out of hardware cloth, baited it and the next day we had enough crabs for dinner for two. When we went to empty it the second day the crocodiles had mashed the pot into a little ball. I guess that's why nobody targets them there. We're thinking of taking some real pots down unassembled and trying our luck in deeper water. http://www.wrclarkepix.shutterfly.com/707

How does the taste in Costa Rica compare to here? I'm looking for a good place to retire in 20 years. Can never start too early.

In the 80s my dad caught an all white blue crab at fort howard and had it in a live box about the time the aquarium was opening. He planned to donate it to them but on the third day it died.

Caught one you are describing a few years ago at Crab Alley. A guy crabbing alongside me said they used to catch them like that years ago and called them "Channel Crabs".

Just like here, it depends who cooks them. Steamed them over beer/water with salt and red pepper flakes. They were excellent even though we had no crab spices down there then. We do now though.

You definitely need to start saving now but thing about a "place" in 20 years is worthless right now. This world can change in 20 days much less 20 years!..........Gary

She getting ready for her steam bath. It's an untouched fishery, numbers are not a problem. Sort of like shooting does. Not a problem in a healthy population.

NO. I see the color of your "electric blue" crabs, I meant powder blue (very, very light blue). I will post a picture if I get another.

No foul. We were catching 50-60 per pot per day in Chincoteague in early July. We were lucky if we could keep five of them. All egg bearing females. Sure bodes well for the future though.
