View Full Version : why snoods?
I just slipknot my baits into my trotline, but I've always wondered why others use snoods. Seems like a lot of effort to me and I can't figure out what the advantage of using them is.
Would some snooder wiser than me care to enlighten me?
#1 they catch more
#2 easier to use

Snoods are easier to bait, let the crab stay a little further under water when the line comes up and absorbs some shock to let them stay on longer...............Gary

I have used a regular trot line the last 30 yrs and just started using a snood this year. I have only had time to go out twice this year with the snood and it catches good but Im not totally sold on it yet. Sometimes the snood hangs up on the net when netting gets busy. That was never a problem before.
The part about rebaiting for me is a wash. The snood bait is easier to remove and replace but it takes more effort to coil the line in a basket. I had always used a hose reel when rebaiting and stored the reel in my freezer. The old line on the reel was easier to feed out as well, no worries about a snood snag.
The only part that really bugs me is the snag part and I guess I need to use it more to get used to it, but as most of us know a snafu when feeding out the line in the morning is a pain in the butt. I would like to hear more opinions pro or con.

for what its worth i like them. i like the quick baiting and unbaiting, and quite frankly I never snag them in the net. seems like i scoop lower that i use to when i started with snoods, but i catch a bushel every trip. not that i go but a few times a month. What i do notice is when i have a guest on the boat, the common complaint is they dont see the crab until the very last minute. I ask them to leave off the sun glasses and focus on the orange/brown mass that comes up and go after them. the little ones ride the line over the roller most of the time but when the doublers and jombos come up I have gotten use to the blurr in the water.::eek2:

you should line your net on one side with smaller chicken wire so the baits dont go through and bring you to a stop and mess up your line
