Folks--
I got a little distracted from the Perch Derby last month by some unexpectedly exotic opportunities. Louise & I celebrated our 30th Anniversary w/ a trip to Jackson Hole, WY, where I caught this 18" Snake River Fine-Spotted Cuttrhtoat on a #12 Royal Wulff dry fly and a 5-wt. rod--with some coaching from a friend.
Later in the month, I joined fellow SRRKC'er Stanley Watkins and several other friends on a trip to the Eyak River near Cordova, AK to fish for silver (coho) salmon. Stanley's son, Sandy, is a cardiologist in Anchorage and keeps in touch with good opportunities for us Old Folks. We hit the run on the button and caught a pile of 9-15# cohos--wonderful, powerful, high-jumping fish, some of which we had flash-frozen and brought home, all wade-fishing (though we used johnboats as taxis to good spots). I hope to bring a smoked fillet to a meeting some time in the next several months. We caught 'em on all sorts of gear, from plug-casting w/ #5 Blue Fox Vibrax spinners to Spey-casting w/ two-handed fly rods w/ articulated streamers like black-and-pink Dali Llamas.
Here's a picture of Stanley w/ a nice coho buck on fly. Watching them hit the spinners, whose thumping action appeared to aggravate them, I tried a SRRKC Special, a 4" Electric Chicken BA Sea Shad on a 1/4-oz. jighead. Attached is a picture of the result (actually caught several on this rig, and had one BA's tail bit off).
Also attached is a photo of Stanley fishing in morning fog on Alaganik Slough, framed by my faithful St. Croix Tidemaster 3-pc. spinning rod, which is "fully engaged" with a coho on a Vibrax. Also caught one on a 1/4-oz. Johnson Silver Minnow w/ a pink grub tail.
Finally, there's a scenic photo of the Eyak with Stanley, his brother Frank (retired Easton radiologist), and Neil Goodrich (Annapolis dentist) hooked up to a silver in the foreground.
Pretty racy stuff for me! Now I'm back to concentrating on WPs and our October Rockfish Derby. Alaska is amazing, but the Severn is home waters. Aren't we lucky?
Best, JPW
