I fished from my kayak in College Creek tonight. Early on, I caught my first perch in two years long enough to qualify for the perch derby.:high5: It was just a hair over 10 1/2 ", so it is not seriously in the running. However, it felt good to break the jinx. I got another at about 10 3/8". Sorry about the homemade measuring trough. I will put a Hawg Trough on my Christmas list.

Now -- the surprise. Later I cast to a fishy looking spot and hooked up with something that did not feel too heavy. I assumed it was an 8" perch. When it got next to the kayak, I saw that it was a young pickerel, 10" - 12" long and about an inch in diameter -- a real "hammer handle". This is the earliest in the fall that I have caught a pickerel in the Severn. I hope it is a harbinger of good pickerel days ahead. The little guy did a self release at boatside -- I was not quick enough with the camera to catch the photo.

I can remember over ten years ago catching pickeral in Sept. on the Severn. I hope it's a sign of good things to come, cause the water looks like crap in the Round Bay area of the Severn.
