I have a 5500W portable generator that I would like to power my well pump.

The well pump uses a 220V 3-wire supply - Red/Black/Green, and the generator provides a 4-Wire 220V Red/Black/Green/White.

I want to make up a cable to feed the well from the generator, and I'm not sure what to do with the white wire. Assuming I want red->red, black->black, green-green.

I was going to use a 10 gauge 4-wire, and simply terminate (i.e., cap it with a wire nut) the white at the well pump end. However, I wonder whether I should run the white to true ground (e.g., hook it to a piece of rebar and drive it into the ground near the generator), or simply use 10 gauge 3-Wire and just ignore the white coming out of the generator.

Any suggestions on the best solution ?

Just cap the white wire.
