All,

You had heard me discuss in prior threads the need for buoy data in the Chesapeake Bay, where none currently exists. Well, based on the following excerpt from an e-mail I received today, it looks like these buoys will be available to you all shortly: "we invested in a program called CCEID, which funded 3 open water wind/wave/currents/water quality deployments in the Bay. We recognized that this was a gamble, since we did not have resources for long-term funding; but we also felt that a demonstration of utility was an important first step. Those buoys are going in the water now and will be online soon, and CBOS and NCBO will be working hard to promote their usefulness to the community." Now, I'm sure you all understand the usefullness of these buoys to ll of us, including us forecasters. So, once this data becomes available (I'll try to keep you updated), start making your voices heard about the importance of these buoys, as no long term funding has currently been found to keep them going beyond their 2 year grant. Thanks.

Appreciate your efforts and the updates. Who do we contact to support them?

Bob,

Will try to let you know that when I find out how to obtain the data.

Bill,
Do you know what type of data these buoy's are going to give.
Thanks

Bubba,

Wind and wave data for sure. Not sure about air/water temp, salinity, etc. I can check when I get back from leave in a couple of weeks. I think I have some of the specs back at the office. Bill S.

any ideas where the buoys will be deployed? There is a big gap on the western shore.

Good on ya!! Would love to get more accurate weather, particularly wave data, in the forecasts. Can't tell you how many times I was on the Bay in my Montauk 17 in 2-3 foot seas while the weather reporter was calling out 1 foot seas. In my little dingy, I was getting quite bruised and wet.

Hope this turns into a long term effort with some additional buoys down the road.
