This came from the Reedville Fishermans Museam. I took the liberty to post it since registration ends in two weeks and it has not been posted on their web site yet. For all of you that have been thinking about giving oyster gardening a try or wondering what it's all about, here is your shot. It's alot of fun!
Saturday, September 24, 2005 - 10:00 a.m. The Reedville Fishermen’s Museum will host its annual oyster gardening workshop on Saturday, September 24, 2005 at 10 a.m. This year’s workshop features a new cage to hold oysters that is similar to the Australian cage used last year. Last year’s cage is no longer available. The new cage is from Tasmania. The cost of each cage will be approximately $11.
This year’s workshop will begin with a presentation on oysters by Jim Wesson, head of oyster replenishment for the Virginia Marine Resources Commission. Wesson will also collect donations of mature oysters to be placed on the VMRC oyster reefs.
Although the focus of this year’s workshop will be the new cage due to its simplicity and ease of handling and maintenance, the Museum will take orders for the traditional Taylor Float – a 2’ by 3’ wire basket with a PVC collar. Precut materials and assembly instructions for the Taylor Float will be available for workshop pick-up, but this float requires a pre-paid order of $75 per float received by the Museum no later than September 7, 2005.
In addition, Peter Perina of Eastfield Farm will have EEEOHM Modules for sale, but these must be reserved in advance. The EEEOHM Module, which accommodates 1,000 mature oysters, is an arrangement of 5 rectangular plastic mesh bags floated by empty 2-liter plastic bottles. Doug McMinn from Chesapeake Bay Oyster Company will have floating bags similar to the EEEOHM kit except the floating mechanism is 2 black plastic cylinders aligned on the longer sides of the mesh bag.
Workshop participants can obtain seed oysters, at the rate of $25 per thousand, from Ken Kurkowski of Middle Peninsula Aquaculture. Seed oysters must be pre-ordered prior to September 7th. (Members of the Northern Neck Oyster Growers wishing to replenish existing floats must contact Don Beard at 804-438-6563 for seed oyster ordering and pickup information.)
Admission to the lecture and demonstration is free. Registration by September 7th is required in order to obtain seed oysters, Tasmanian cages, or Taylor Float material, so that an adequate supply of these items will be on hand the date of the workshop. To register or for more information, please contact Cal Boyd (at 804-453-5333 or via email at jkbjcb@highstream.net. Once registration is completed, arrangements for payment via check or credit card can be made by contacting the Reedville Fishermens’ Museum at 804-453-6529 or via email at rfmstaff@crosslink.net.
