Went out to the woods to do some final stand brushing and sighting in for the muzzleloader opener next weekend here in NOVA. The gnats were driving us absolutely nuts. Going for the eyes and ears like they were on a kamikaze mission. Anybody got any tips for keeping these bastards away. Mark

I gave up on early season hunting for the ticks, skeeters, flies, gnats, chiggers and sweat! Some say that the thermocell works great and there is always deet. The only other thing is the Bug Tamer suit like I wear in Canada bear hunting to keep black flies off. Done with that too:eek2:Good luck..........Gary

Even if you put 100% DEET on your skin, gnats and no-see-ums will get you! The only way to ward them off is a head net!

For mosquitoes, I will say that the ThermoCell is awesome! I spent a number of days in the tree this fall and had a few (like maybe a half dozen) buzz my ears or eyes, where in past years its been non-stop mosquito assault. I can't say enough how well the product works. Even had a spike 20 yards downwind from me who didn't have a clue I was there.

i don't know why i bought it, but I bought a can at BPS that says "No Stinkin' Bugs" on it and it has scent guard ...... so far it has worked and they haven't blew at me ... so maybe that product is worth looking at.

When I use my Thermo Cell, I have never had a mosquito or gnat assault me. I swear by this thing, don't leave home without it. BTW: I did try the earth scent pads in my Thermo Cell this year, but I thought they smelled like cologne, very strong. I turned it off and have gone back to the original pads. I have never been busted with these.

Don't overlook good old "Deep Woods Off". There is a reason why it is the number one seller. It contains 25% Deet. If you want more Deet, the "Deep Woods Sportsman" contains 30% Deet. And the Deep Woods Sportsman "pump spray" contains 98% Deet. I have found that all of them contain enough Deet to control pests. The larger percentage of Deet does not make it more effective, it just lasts longer. I tend to sweat a lot and must reply periodically. It may not completely eliminate the annoyance from little critters, but there is no other secret formula that will help you more. [http://www.homs.com/July2004_USDA_marked.pdf
