I just purcheased an H&R ultraslug 20 guage. I started the sight in process with Winchester Dual Bond slugs. These have not given me the results I hoped for at 100 yds. They are ok at 50 yds, but I am lucky to hold an 8-9 inch group at 100.
I have checked for any of the obvious issues(scope not tight, etc.)Any input on rounds and groups you are getting with yours would be greatly appreciated. Hopefully I can narrow down the next choices. Thank you in advance for your response.

My ultra 20 holds a nice group with litefields and hornadys @ 100yds. I'd guess it's about 5 inches. A better shooter should be able to make it better. At 50 yards I can drive tacks - holes touching. I have never taken a 100yd shot while hunting (and don't intend to), but with my bad shooting habits the gun and slug combo (most recently hornady's) meet my expectations. I always joke that it shoots better than my ability. It's a fun gun.

I didn't end up buying one (decided to use funds on an inline). What I found with research and from talking to people was that accuracy had a lot to do with ammo. Lifefields and hornady's as Scott said were what I was hearing as well.

Try the Lightfields. My brother has the same gun and his slugs touch each other at 100 yards with the Lightfields.

My dad had the same problem with his H & R 12 ga. ultra slut shooting the Dual bonds. He was dead on at 50, but way off at 100. But i shot the dual bonds out of my remington 1100 with a rifled slug barrel and it was dead on at 50 and 100. Could it be the gun??

I use the Hornadyy's, will consistently place shots in a 4" circle at 200yds, with any deer that are closer. remember to adjust accordinglly,,, ballistics are on the box.

I shoot an 11/87 12 gauge and Rem copper solids group well @ 100. I can hold about a 3 inch pattern.

H&R is not a top of the line gun, i would be willing to bet its the gun

The Federal Barnes expanders usually shoot very well out of the H&R's, as do the Hornady SST's. I shoot Hastings laser sabots out of mine, and i have put 3 slugs through the same hole at 50 yds, they are the best slug i've ever shot through mine, but Hastings Barrell Co went out of business last year so they may be hard to find now.
Remember, every gun will shoot the same ammo differently. You can take two of the exact same guns set up identical, and they will prefer different ammo.

The best thing to do is try several different brands of ammo and see which your gun likes best.
Federal Barnes expander, Winchester partition gold, Winchester Supreme XP3, Hornady SST, and Hastings laser sabots (if you can find them) are some of the most accurate. The Remington Buckhammers are designed pretty similar to the Hastings laser sabots, and i've read alot of good reviews on them as well, and at roughly half the price of most of the other slugs they are worth giving a try to see how they shoot out of your gun.

I shot Lightfield's for years and finally gave up on them, too many flyers. The random flyers are what led to my search for a reliable slug, and led me to the Hastings laser sabots.

Each gun, even the same brand and model will shoot differently. You just need to shoot different slugs until you find one that shoots well in your gun.............Gary

I have the H&R 20G. I shoot the hornandys. I dropped one last season at 130-140 yds. Change your ammo. I bet if you dig online, you will find someone who tested different slugs on this gun.

You're being sarcastic, right? Please say you're being sarcastic.

Mine does really well with the Remington Copper Solids. The past two seasons, I've caught them at Dick's when Remington does the rebate on them. I too have read that the Lightfields often perform well. I will probably never take another shotgun in the stand with me than my Ultraslug. Not the best for still hunting though with as heavy as they are.

I have NEVER heard anything bad about an H&R Ultra Slug gun. Like I said, all guns even the same make and model shoot differently. YOU have to find the right slug for your gun.............Gary

I thought so. That's why I didn't go respond with a rant! : ) Of coarse, you know how many people think like that.

I picked up the H&R Ultra in 20 gauge a few years back and lets just say I don't waste too much meat anymore. That is unless you like neck roast. Like others have said take several different types of ammo out and see which ones your gun likes. Mine does really well with the Remington Copper Solids.

As others have already said; Remington Copper Solids are my choice too. Both of my sons shot H&R 'S and they are dead on at 175yds. shooting this load. The hornadays did well too. But the Remingtons were better IMO. They may be less expensive guns but they shoot GREAT! Its all in the ammo.
