View Full Version : Penn 220 Combo - Problem with line getting hung up, nicked, then breaking

I am having a recurring problem with my Penn 220 reel. When letting out line while trolling.....the line often gets hung up on the right hand side of the reel....this happens even when keeping my thumb on the reel to keep the speed down to a reasonable rate.

The line gets nicked when stuck and in the process of me un-sticking it. The nicked line breaks prematurely. I lost two rigs this weekend (3 way swivel, 50 lb leader, 20 oz sinker, Bomber LongA stickbait) bringing them in at a very slow trolling speed...basically stopped....with no fish on the other end.

I am using the 30 lb high-vis Bass Pro mono.

So...anyone else having problems with this reel? Is it the cheap line I am using? Can someone recommend a good $100 trolling combo? Thanks

get yourself a senator combo. I dont think the problem is necessarily the line it may be the reel itself. Send a message to penn on their website about the problem and see what they say back.

Cheap line with to much weight, I think. I troll with 35lb. Cajun Red and never had it mess-up, and use the lest amount of weight I can.

good point ...but I should have mentioed that this also happens when pulling just a stick bait or swimbait (no weight). Thanks

Thanks...but I would rather buy new. Can anyone recommend decent combos for trolling for $125 or so? Thanks.
