I need some suggestions on where to buy my next cooler.
There must be a cheaper place than West Marine.

Hold out Capt. Tom. West Marine will probably be putting them on sale again in the dead of winter. If you need one sooner than that you can borrow our 94qt.

I have a big, I think 92 quart Igloo I bought new last summer. Saturday, my guest opened the top to deposit a keeper rockfish and the latch ripped nearly off. Like most products, Igloo does not make them like they used to. I bought this at West in Deltaville. I am going to take it back tommorow to see if I can get any credit.

Bass Pro has had some really good sales on Igloo coolers in the spring & early summer. Not a great time right now.

When the big fish show up I would get at least a 128 qt cooler. I bought two at price club a few years back for $60 sometime each. You may want to try them or sams club. Tight Lines

Most all the parts for the Igloo coolers are avalable, so that broken latch can be fixed.

I bought a 152 qt. Igoo cooler for large stripers (it has food tray also) in the spring and have not used it much. I am selling my 29" Chris Craft (on TF classifieds). I was going to sell the cooler in the spring. If your interested call me at 804-380-9439. I paid $120 but would sell it for $80. Mike PS. The few fish we put in the cooler, we put in plastic trash bags first.
The December issue of Powerboat Reports has a good article on coolers. You can search for it on line at above name for a free ''peek''. A full view of the article reguires a subscription.......................Happy Thanksgiving to all.....Rolf

call up SSI they make coolers in southern maryland. I used to use huge Igloo coolers but i tried to put a rather irate tuna in a 128 igloo cooler a few years back and when i sat down on top of the lid to hold him in the tuna blew out the side of the cooler with its tail while I was "riding" the cooler. After that I bought 2 very nice SSI coolers with metal latches and I have not had a problem since. If you are looking for a cheap one...a lot of times the factory will have "defect" sales where they sell the coolers that work great but are not entirely spotless.... if you need the info just let me know.

In fairness to Igloo, yesterday I bought a replacement hinge at West Marine in Deltaville. My cooler is now good a new and waiting for its first big rockfish.

Gander Mountain has some great deals on IceyTek coolers. I got a 95qt, and they had a 125 qt both about half price.

Keep your eyes open at Walmart. Periodically they'll sell 120 to 150 qt coolers for around $50.
This is a good time, since summer is over. Rather than send them back, you'll find them stacked on the top of a rack to wait until summer. They might not even be in sporting goods like normal. Ask.
I've got three now, all from Walmart at around $50 each.

If there's a Big Lotz store near you hang in there. I bought a Rubbermaid 178 qt cooler there a while back that I paid $74.95 for. They have stuff at ridculous prices at times. Only problem is that you ahve to stop in on a regular basis to find the deals.

A friend of mine does not allow coolers on his boat. To big ,slide around , get in the way. We used the Big Tuna soft bags they worked great and kept ice for three days. You can lay them anywhere. With a couple of zip ties we hooked one to the front railing on a 26 foot Trophy.

Tom I have 4 120 to 140 qrt Igloo coolers Ive used now for about 3 or 4 years. Gone through alot of hinges and laches but they have held up to many lifts full of fish summer and winter. I think for the money and the harsh treatment your going to put on them as a charter capt there a good buy. I tried to buy an IcyTek back in September but the one I wanted hasn't come out yet. Their supose to last a lifetime but I hear repalcement parts will burn you up on top of the initial price. Their also much heavier which is good and bad(Bad dragging them to the truck after a long weekend of fishing and if they get to moving around on the boat) I'll let you know how the Iceytek holds up under EXTREME use(when the 2006 models come out )and pass on that best buy if you find it on the Igloos. Hey Igloo Tom and I will be your extreme test Capts for free Coolers if your intrested and reading. No use saying that to Icytek as they feel their doing you a favor selling you a cooler.
Have a good one Tom

Depends what you're using it for. For a "fish-box", can't beat the large marine Igloos. My Icey-Tek performs as advertised: keeps ice, food, bait, etc for up to a week. But who wants to keep fish in a cooler for a week?[smile]

Guys you are all missing the boat. the debate between icetec and igloo is not even an issue. if you use SSI coolers they are relatively light weight and with solid stainless latches and hinges they never need replacement.
anyone up for winter time fishing??

I have had them all, Igloo,Gott,SSI,IceyTek. You get what you pay for. Igloo are use'm and throw'em away. Gott's are a little better built and last longer. I have had the monster 600 gt. SSI for 15 years, a great cooler but it has lost its original shape. Have only owned the IcyTek 170 since July '05 but was impressed enough to buy a discounted bigger one last week. Tuna fishing is tough on coolers, however the ice retention is critical when tunas are coming from 70 to 80 degree water. If you are not tuna fishing buy the cheap ones and replace every few years. Tell your crew not to stand or set on them and they will last much longer.

Get an icey tek or ultra cool cooler. They hold ice much longer than the competitors and are worth the money. I have a friend who drives around with a small one in the back of his truck with beverages in it. One bag of ice this time of year and it lasts weeks. During the summer he can usually get about 4 days out of a bag of ice.

120 qt. IGLOOs are on sale right now at Walmart.com for $39.95. That deal is hard to beat and the Rockfish won't care if they're in a 40 dollar or 400 dollar box.[smile]
ice-tech becomes part of your boat. best cooler i ever owned. ice keeps for days.
