Does anyone have an auto policy with progressive? I'm doing some shopping around because i think my car insurance premium is high.

Truthfully - i've been with my current company for probably 6 years and have never made a claim. So i couldn't tell you one way or another if they are good or not.

What do ya'll think about progressive?

Good commercial!. All insurance companies are advertising and fighting for your business. Tough time for every one, including them. Never had a claim, that is what these companies are looking for. Try to negotiate with your current insurance co. They would rather save a good customer than take a chance on a new one. I dropped collision on one of my older vehicles to lower cost. Good luck...........Gary

Drop a B mail to TFer - Polkster. I think he handles insurance.

Sometimes , the cheapest rate is not the best deal. I've been with State Farm - same agent , for 30 years. I can get insurance cheaper but the couple of times we have had a claim - no troubles or headaches.

Most of the big companies will be close to each other - never hurts to get 3-4 quotes. You often can save some money if you are willing to carry a higher deductible. Sometimes putting the house , boat , etc with the same company will lower the rate.

Mike, call Travelers and Selective. Chances are you will not find it cheaper.

I'd echo sailfish. Plus SF always sends you a small dividend check if they make some money as a company. they have been doing that for years whereas some of the other insurance companies are just starting to do that.

I had 2 unpleasant experiences with Progressive; I would not recommend them.

Mike,
I am an Erie agent and generally our rates are very competitive for drivers without tickets, multiple accients etc. Erie does not advertise on TV, but they are excellent company. A quote would take about 10 minutes.

Should always call around every 6 months to all the main insurance carriers. Their rates always change and depending on what bracket you fall into another agency can give you a better rate. Insurance is a complicated design to make money. Unfortunately we all need it, but never pay too much for it.

I was with Geico for 16 years. I just switched over to Progressive. They were WAY cheaper than Geico. We have perfect driving records and all of the numbers matched up. I can't give you an opinion on Progressive but I made the change. Geico was not willing to do anything at all to save me. I switched EVERYTHING over except boat insurance. I have SKI SAFE for that. My .02 cents.

Was given this advice 40 years ago and still practice it. Although since we have been with Erie for several years now without a claim and have all of our insurance (house, condo ,car) no one has been able to come up with a price to make it worthwhile to change. No matter what anyone says insurance companies are all about themselves no matter how they put a spin on caring about you.

Use a company that can broker the insurance. They do the shopping for you. And they are going to know the insurance companies better than most. Plus they will help you deal with the insurance company when you have a claim or problem. My only problem with using the same agent that only sells for one company is that you could be paying hundreds or thousands more each year. When i left the guy that my parents have been using for 20+ years, i saved 1200 a year. I was actually a little pissed at the guy for not at least trying to get me something cheaper. Plus you can just make a call to them every year and have them shop for a new company to make sure you are paying a fair price. They can tell you why you should use one company over another.

I have a company i use in Parkville. If you want the info, let me know. It’s simple, just one call, and they will shop a bunch of quotes for you. Plus they can look at your home owner/renters/boat if needed.

(I have no affiliation with them other than being a happy client. I guess I just get upset when I think about what I paid over the year I was with that one agent)

Sorry - final thought. Like bebopper said, they are all out to make money. No matter what insurance company you use you will have good reviews and bad one. Most of the time, its the claim person you get when you call in that will make or break your thoughts of the company. Not the company itself.

I have Erie Insurance and they are terrific. We saved a lot and they have not raised our rates in 3 years. You get real attention.
Some girl from Geico just hit me and they were terrible to deal with IMHO.

Went with Progressive and soon after received a package that contained a device for each car that needed to be plugged in under dashboard. Agent said it tracked driving habits. Told Progressive where to stick them and went with Encompass.

I need insurance for house-2 cars-SUV's - 2 boats- 1- 4 wheeler.

Another vote for Erie. I've had accounts with them for years and highly recommend them. Give Hockleyneck a buzz and let him help you.

Please don't take this as a sales pitch. I am an Independent Agent who represents many of the companies previously mentioned. We represent Erie, Encompass, Progressive, Farmers, Peninsula, Penn National, AIC, Frederick Mutual, Allied, RLI Marine & Fidelity and Selective Flood. Please feel free to contact me with any questions regarding these companies. I have never posted anything on this forum trying to sell insurance as our agency has a very personal approch but I think I may be able to answer some questions. My name is Chris with Bayside Ins Assoc 410-643-6641 or chris@bayside-insurance.com.

I am an Insurance Agent and sell for Progressive, Nationwide, Farmers, Safeco, and a few others. I would be happy to give you a second opinion on your insurance. Depending on your situation, the price can vary. Some companies are better for perfect drivers, others are better for discounts when you have auto/home and other vehicles, age of drivers, and address all can affect rate. I will price several to give you the best rate. Call or email me for a free no obligation quote. -Andy

As mentioned above, I deal with alot of Insurance Companies. To add to it, Encompass is owned by Allstate and Allied is owned by Nationwide so I technically have dealings with both these companies also. From an Independant Agents point of view I have to agree with many of you, Erie is by far the best company out of the ones listed above. Their rates, rate consistency, claims service and their dealings with our agency are superior to the others. Hope this helps.

It would seem to me that if one was to use a broker to buy something it would cost MORE not LESS. Given that there is now an additional hand in the pie reaching for his peice.. Just common CENTS!

Flo (the progressive lady) is pretty funny but I wouldnt buy insurance from her..

I like the Esurance babe!!

Ive been w/ state farm forever. They took a chance on me when I moved to MD in 1990 and had to get on MAIF.

The more stuff you insure with one company the better your negotiating.. Umbrella policy sometimes makes sense when you start having alot to insure...

I don't have progressive, but my wife was recently rear ended by a driver who had progressive. My wife's car was under a year old. The damage wasn't excessive (under $2000) but had to be fixed. The progressive people were professional and on the ball. They made arrangements for a rental and when additional damage was found they approved it without any hesitation. They kept us informed thruout the repair and made sure everything was done to our satisfaction. They were friendly and pleasant.

Grady,
You are correct. If you use an actual Insurance Broker, similar to a Stock Broker, they add fees. Most all Independent and Captive Insurance Agents in Maryland do not. Other states are a different story. You will also notice many Direct Underwriters such as Progressive offer better rates if you deal direct and not through an agent. Many of these Insurance Companies rates are not nearly as competive as an Insurance Company who only deals through an Independent Agent. The Agent actually keeps the Insurance Companies honest and competive because they know we can write the business with multiple other companies. Most of these companies who deal through an Independent Agent do not advertise saving Millions and allowing for more competive rates.

I agree with Sailfish in that you get what you pay for. I have been with State Farm 34 years, excellent service and great people. I have all my vechiles, home, boat and beach house insured with State Farm. Over the years I have had several claims where someone hit one of our vechiles and left. The vechiles were repaired extremly fast at a shop of my choice and with no issues. I can't say enough about them.
