Coyotes are everywhere, thats part of living in the countryside. They are smart buggers too and hard to kill. I gotta feeling Krunch's post is an inside joke with someone on here.

One was dead on the 95 south bound from Kings Dominion about 5 weeks ago then 2weeks after seeing it another one dead as that was a crossing I assume for them? (at the Cracker Barrell) Lay 10 feet from each other.

Seriously, and I am not making a joke, but I am missing one of my cats and I live in King and Queen, back of the Mattaponi. This would make sense. I have not thought of that. I had a skunk hanging around the field and house spraying my dogs and the neighbors down the way. He even was waiting for my child when she got off the bus in the field right beside the driveway. I thought maybe my kitty and the skunk had it out! Or those groundhogs of abundance that live in the farming field.

Why kill them? I can understand farmers wanting to keep them under control if they are in the chicken coop but what is the general dislike for these guys. I saw one the other day running up the neighbors driveway but I never thought to go grab the gun.

Purdue1

Why do you step on a cockroach, swat at a fly, etc.? On the farm I use to always carry a gun in the tractor. When running the tractor theywould pass right by you. First time you put it in park, or even let off the throttle....they would take off very quickly. Don't feel sorry for the coyote, they are smart buggers and will do just fine for themselves. There is one in Central Park (New York City), is that the one you are referring to Krunch?

By the way, yes it could have gotten your cat, but I would doubt it. Rabitts are a much easier meal. We had about 12 ducks at one time. One morning there were 10 left, next morning 6, next morning 3, next morning 1. You should have seen the look on that last ducks face. Next morning no ducks.

By the way, they taste like chicken.

From a historical standpoint, Lewis and Clark did not see the first coyote until they were on the western side of the Mississippi. Makes you wonder what has enabled these critters to expand their range...

I remember a couple of years ago, Bath County had a bounty for coyotes in their budget. It got used up so fast that they appropriated the same amount again in the same year and it ran out. They are plentyful over in the mountains. It had to be only a matter of time before them found their way here.

"Coyote's" There's a bounty on them in Nottoway Co. $50.00 there are plenty to go around. Read your sports mag. They reproduce fast. their hearing and sight are much better than a turkey and their smell is unreal. They are here to stay..... Freddie

Shenandoah county resident here..I am telling you these are the smartest critters I have ever run across. Showed up here about 10 years ago.. One killed occasionally by deer hunter or hit by car..Then as you all are seeing two killed on this farm three killed on that farm..Well I am a novice trapper.. By no means an expert..But I do associate with some.. We use snares to catch most of our animals.. The snares have stops on them so if a non target animal is caught it can be released unharmed, neighbors cat, coon dogs...This years catch was 33 coyotes..That number is accomplished part-time trapping and working fulltime job.. Coyotes are very oppurtunistic..They need to eat...Up here they seem to show up where we have too many deer. It is my opinion that they need to be kept in check. Kill any or all you can.. Because your not going to have too many oppurtunities..They will decimate your deer herd and I just recently found two mature turkey gobblers dead..I blame the coyotes...just fyi take it as you may good luck,Donnie B........

I have killed two beside a neighborhood in Hanover county and have seen plenty more that I couldn't get a shot on. I took one with a bow and the other with a rifle. They are very tricky animals with a keen nose. They multiply like rabbits and their going to get more plentiful in Hanover! People have no clue how close their getting. I will post some pictures if there is any interest.

Coyote "ARE" getting out of hand. I think they wree brought to some areas to control the deer population but never considered the fact that the mutiply as fast as they do. If something is not done with the coyote there will be a cease fire on the deer :-). Dont want that!

By the way...........Who is "M rno shoulders?

Mr. No Sholders (Capitilized for the next six months) is the snake. Here in the Back Bay region, its mostly cottonmouths, however, there are canebrake rattlesnakes a little south and copperheads everywhere to the west.

Coyotes have been reintroduced to the North American animal kingdom. You wil notice their resilencey. They have to eat and do. Probably a nice idea gone astray, as they are an additional predator. You won't kill many with a gun or poison.

strolled into a Quizno's in downtown Chicago IL , was fun to watch on the news, must have been too warm for him as he sat for about an hour in the chilled food section before animal control removed him...probably to a zoo

I live in Lower Lancaster Co. and had 4 in the yard trying to get my Lab puppy while I was standing rite there. Killed one but the rest are on the loose. I've seen a few over the past couple of years but not in a pack like that. Makes me wonder how fast they are reproducing? Kill them all!!

We have killed 7-8 on our farm here in Nottoway County. They are pretty thick here too. Used to have a $50 bount on them but they took it away. Buddy of mine mounted the first one he killed and it is the best looking mount I have ever seen. Last one we killed came to us while we were calling a turkey. Billy

I am reluctant to mention this as I just made another post about a seal swiming up to my layout boat 4 days ago, but I killed one off of my porch 2 years ago, right in Wicomico Church....He was trying to get the Swan that would visit our cove......Probably should have let him kill the Swan, but couldn't do it. Seems they are just about everywhere.

No question.....Not to mention chasing every other waterfowl species out of their territory....Swan just went missing last year.....prior to that he was around when I was a teenager in the early 80s.....just couldn't let that yote get him. Not sure yote would have won that fight either....

Been hunting since the early '60's and saw my first one in Powhatan county on 12/19/07 and was lucky enough to take that one with the rifle. From a trophy perspective, I consider it to be the equal of my Bobcat with the bow in King & Queen County about 7 yeas ago. The 'yote is being mounted and preserved for many years to come.

The strangest thing is that I saw my second Coyote the following week. He ran across Otterdale road at the intersection of Old Hundred Road. This is certainly in the suburbs of Richmond.

Yeah, we've got 'em too at my hunt club in Dinwiddie. I saw a small black coyote one morning but didn't think anything of it until some of our "predator hunters" said they called a small black one in the day before, but couldn't get a shot. I also had a big ol' black bear try to sneak past me that day, too.
I'm trying to get pictures of the mountain lions that a woman has in her back yard near my club. One of our guys found 3 deer carcasses near a brushpile where she has been seeing them. VDGIF says "there are no mountain lions in Dinwiddie County".... They also used to say "there are no coyotes in Dinwiddie County"... What's next - cheetahs?

Pretty common now is Arlington. My wife found one sitting on our front lawn headed out to walk the dog at 10 PM several months ago. A lot of other sightings and "run ins" in this area. About 3 miles from the pentagon. Very few cats any more.

She supposedly has pics of 3 or 4 young cats playing in her back yard, but I haven't seen them. She said they looked like bobcats with long tails. The information I got on them was from a very reliable source. I'll try his wife - she's a little more computer savvy, and may have gotten pics.
I've hunted all my life, and finally saw a coyote and a bear in one day! I also saw a smaller bear the first day of deer season run across a wide open cutover, but the big one was trying to sneak out of some thick pines and looked me in the eyes at 15'!!!:eek2:
He didn't waste any time getting the heck out of there. ...Wish it was bear season.

Having a photo of a wild mountain lion in Virginia would be a big deal since they are believed to be extinct in the east outside Maine and Florida.

i have a different opinion - if i kill something i eat it. i dont kill on a whim or because of some undesireable characteristic. Between 50 and 70 percent of the young coyotes die before adulthood. Of the young that die, 80 percent is the result of human trapping, shooting, poisons, or other control methods. growing up we had all sorts of animals - the chicken house was raided. solution - build a better house.
