I have been trying to figure out what is the best knot to use for 80-100lb Ande mono. My original plan was to use crimps on both the lure and swivel but I have read all the horror stories of crimps. I still plan on using some crimps on the lures but I want to use a solid and proven knot for the swivel. Typically I like to use the Palomar knot but it doesn't like to pull tight and when it does it usually leaves abrasions on the line.

Does anyone have any suggestions to try?

Thanks

Use a bimini twist to make the loop and the you can go from there. Crimps are tricky you need to find the right size or it wont work. Too small and it cuts into the mono, too big and it doesnt get enough grab. WHen you are crimping heavy big game try using the offshore loop knot before you crimp. You can also do two crimps stacked close but not touching for extra.

How much drag will you be using with these leaders?

Knots are rated as a percentage of the line strength. A simple improved clinch (80 - 85%) or a uni knot (85-90%) has more than enough strength unless your fishiing in excess of #60 of drag. On #80 line, the clinch would be good to #64 and the uni-knot would be good to #68. Using #100 line, these numbers go to #80 and #85.

As for the knots not pulling tight: I don't like Ande. I gave up on it long ago. The stuff is like trying to tie barbed wire. There are other "premium" lines are much easier to tie. I prefer Sufix Superior but Momoi and Blue Diamond are good as well.

Maybe it is the line that is the problem, I will give suffix superior a shot. Thanks for the advice!

crimps work fine, I have never had a problem.

Ditto on crimp success...never had any problems. I have however tied polomars with 80 when I had to. You really need to lube up the knot with plenty of spit and work it, keep your tag end long and then tighten snug with pliers....obvioussly pulling from tag end.

My advice would be crimping. Another trick for crimping is to melt your tag end PRIOR TO CRIMPING, then slide it snug and crimp.....adds a bit if security. But overall, you will be fine w or w/o a melted end.....I just like the way it looks and it does help a little if your crimp slips....which as far as I remember has only happened once or twice in 20+yrs of fishing

1. Use properly sized oval or double barrel sleeves...I do not like round sleeves
2. Use proper crimping tool....cupped to cupped and use it correctly
3. Do not crimp the end of the sleeve, leave about 1/16 or so on each end untouched and crimp the differance in the middle
4. Do not over crimp....if you use cup to cup crimping tool with either oval or double (prefer double) correctly it is designed to apply adequate pressure to provide a secure connection. You do not need to do crimp any further with any other tool or use crimper in any differant manner.
5. I like double barrels, but if you go with oval (which work fine, just my preferance) make sure lines lay next to each other in sleeve not crossed.
6. Bring crimper and crimps with you when you go fishing:))

3 turn uni knot works consistently for me on 100lb mono
