Striper fishing

Ok guys, bear with me.
Im just getting into river fishing. Like to catch cats. But, have NEVER caught a striper. Friends say they hit like heck and its a great fight. He says to get your cat pole, slap a hook on the end and 1/2 a brim and toss it out and wait.

How and were do you guys usually fish for them. Not looking for any secrets here, just trying to get in the right direction to land one of these things. Thanks in advance -Jake

Stripers are more fun on light tackle. Using rattletraps or sassy shads, alot of times you gotta locate the stripers though. Never caught one on bream in the James before, usually use herring, gizzards or threadfins.

And waiting you will be. Ketching the Striper will be more in the right location that anything. As for bait,cut Herring,live shad or Bloodworms are the best.

Here is what I have had luck with personally:

Bait & Wait: If you are cat fishing, you may hook up into a stripe just doing that.

Chunk & Wind: Rattle Taps, Buck tails, Salt Water Assassins, Zara/super Spooks.

Trolling: Deep Diving Red Fns, Stretch’s. All deep, 17-20’ depth. Bounce bottom.

Fly Fishing: Over/Under, Deceivers, Clousers, and poppers. Sinking line best bet.

Colors: White/Chartreuse, gold, chrome/blue, olive.

Time of year: Now through late spring and really all year w/ various successes.

Season/slots/limits: There is a season, check VDGIF for regs if you want to keep.
