View Full Version : Living closer to the James

I'm actively looking for a new job (healthcare IT manager if you can hook me up!) so I can move back to Richmond and be closer to family, the James and some saltwater spots. I'm currently in Charlottesville and just tired of the commute and not getting to fish anywhere near as much as I would like. I stopped in Highland Springs on the way home Sunday and was pretty much disgusted - so it has me wondering where some of the better parts of town are to the east and outside Richmond to move to?

I'm looking for ideal commuter access to I-64/I-295 but also fairly convenient access to some of the more common ramps (I personally like Deep Bottom). That new I-895 might open up locations on the east of the James and I don't really know what is over there. I know I'm gonna have to accept that Richmond has grown up and has a trashier big city feel (billboards, ugly commercialization, etc) but perhaps there are a few villages left with a little bit slower feel. I'll be buying a house and making it my base camp for lots more fishing excursions.

Thanks for any input. Bmail is fine too.

Sounds like you need to check out the Varina area. Growing pretty quickly with lots of new housing.

Varina is the ticket. We are hiring a Director of IT Security, probably not your thing but I thought Id put it out there.

I will think on it a little bit, but my first thought is you should move in with Big Cat and look for a job between fishing. StriperJoe has an extra room. You could live at my house but my wife says that the next man she lives with is going to have to know how to please a woman.[sad]

Most of the guides are single (some are even straight). Might get a room and some fishing benefits.

Varina is the place to go, but get in as soon as you can. Prices are headed up.

My wife and I live in Varina on Osborne Turnpike 1/4 mile from Osborne Landing. Love it! Tidal Bass fishing, seasonal striper fishing, Shad are thick right now and some of the best cat fishing anywhere. Wilton Farms is the next big development coming this way next few years on time line. Shop Area 40 in real estate ads for prospective homes. We may be building a new home soon if we can work out the details with a builder and will be renting my house after we move, but that may not happen till the Fall/Winter of this year. Ken Roberts is a local realtor that may be able to help you 804-795-2529.

Sweet, thanks for the info. I should probably skip a day fishing and check out Varina.

Thanks for the tip on the hookers, Chris. Any specific recommendations?

When we bought this house, I told my wife the only requirements I have is brick ranch, nobody behind so I can shoot the bow, and a garage big enough for my boat.

Um...we have a two story with vinyl, in a subdivision where my son can cast and hit a house in any direction and my boat is under a carport. I am whipped. But she is good to me. I get to hunt and fish.

Dayton, when do you get to hunt and fish?

They say building a house is a true test of a marriage. Is it a bad sign that my wife is crying already and the plans are not complete? A double wide is looking better and better every day! Pull it in, set it up... DONE! Let's move in honey! [wink]

Fishing is also a true test of marriage. When I was selling real estate my ex-wife loved me. When I started fishing for a livin she booted me out of the house.

Hey! I do okay. I am not on a leash. I get to fish two days in April (one has to be my birthday) and hunt two days in the fall!

So there!

I spent Saturday checking out the Varina area and there certainly appears to be plenty of homes. It would be nice living that close to Osbourne and Deep Bottom but where the heck does everybody do their day-to-day shopping?!?!? No Lowes/Home Depot, no Walmart, no Hooters, etc.. At least there is that cool BBQ joint, but I need a Lowes cuz it seems I'm always finishing up one or more projects (OK, starting projects. I don't always finish them :))

Are there any shopping center plans for Varina that might provide retail services? I was told everybody drives to Mechanicsville if they need stuff.

Chester Lowes and Home depot is 15 minutes away. There is also Laburnum ave. about 5 min away which has fast food and hardware stores and automotive stuff and all that. Mechanicsville has the Walmart. Hooters is also in chester and you will pass if on your way to Home depot. The other Varina restaurant is Portabellas. It's right next to the food lion. Anything else?

Always shop Home depot not Lowes. Jimmy Johnson sucks!

I need to investigate the lower areas of I-295 and Chester - I actually grew up in Southside. I'm sure Chester has changed a whole lot since I was last there.
