Is anyone going to try a dive or spear trip this week? I'm curious as to what this storm has done to the visibility. I've dove after big storms have passed way off the coast and had outstanding visibility but i'm afraid this storm may have ruined things for a while. Very curious

Where you planning ? Local ?
The viz. off OC is always a gamble. I've seen 4 feet - then we move about 5 miles and it was 30 feet.
Safe bet Irene stirred things up. Upside - if you dive a shallow wreck , might be some cool stuff exposed.
Beware - some wrecks ( real ones - not reefs ) - still have live ammo. Tempting to bring it up but best to leave it be. Heard horror stories of ammo exploding a day or two after brought up.
One option - weed lines. Some times after a big storm , huge mats form. Great to spear gun but watch for tax man , he likes to hunt too.

Was thinking OC or Va Beach. Looks like Hurricane Katia may send some clean water our way. Fingers crossed

If I was given a choice - I'd take Va. Beach any day. Funny how different it is above or below the bay mouth.
There is some cool stuff near the light tower - 12-13 miles off Va, beach. I don't have numbers but supposed to be some old Army tanks put down as part of a fishing reef.
I'm going Friday evening off Deale - guy got a crab pot wrapped in his prop. If it goes fast - figure finish tank on West River reef. Hoping for foot of viz. - that's sad in a twisted way.
Good luck if you go.

Going to the Tower Reef Saturday.
Please, let me know it is. Looks like Drewzim and I are headed to Ocean City next weekend and could use some intel as to how the storm affected the visibility. If it's crappy at the tower and reef, it's definitely crappy in OC. Good luck!
I plan to dive Sun on the 4a drydock and maybe a wreck nearby.I'll post what I see if we go. Good diving.

Dove near the Light Tower - no vis, but bottom now 69F. Then headed to the Brass Spike - Great vis to 60ft down then went to crap (less than 1ft). Temp was 66F though - so warming up, but I'd give the vis some more time!! Also, passed plenty of floating sea grass, and had to dodge a few tree limbs/ trunks floating about!!

Duncan, thanks for the info. I got a report from someone who dives off OC a lot and he said vis has been 1-2 feet inside 10 miles. Not good.

Well, Andy and I decided to head to Cape Charles instead of OC only because we got a report that the water looked decent. We caught the last of the flood tide which gave us a glimmer of hope for the first dive at tower reef tug boat which turned out to be a barge. The top 30 feet was gin clear but found only 1 - 2 feet of visibility on bottom.
Next dive was the Brass Spike. Got to the bottom and found zero visibility and I mean zero. I touched my goggles at 74 feet just so I could see SOMETHING. There was nothing we could do on that dive but abort.
We then went to the tower and used up some air playing with spade fish. There was maybe 15 feet of visibility up top and about 2 feet on bottom.
The tower saved us from a completely busted dive trip. We pretty much got what we expected and Andy handled the low visibility conditions very well. So he's seen the worst, I hope the next dives will give up some visibility.

Abort a muck dive ? You pu$$y :devil2:.
Shame the bottom viz. went to sh*t but not uncommon around here.
The really fun muck dives are when " some thing " touches your mask for you .
Hopefully we get a nice 5-6 day high pressure system to clear every thing up.

Go on now Skip! lol It's called the Brass Spike for a reason. Didn't want to get one up my arse without at least some flatties to show for it.
Gonna try OC in October if Andy can swing it. Room for one more diver on the Seacraft...

Let me know - if I can get free , you know I'll go.
Smart calling the dive on a site you do not know well - when viz. gets that bad.
