Tried to get some bait this evening. First throw: 1/2 lb bass. Second throw: immovable object/net eater.

Might as well have thrown 3 20's into the river and headed home.

I hate fishing.

I feel your pain ! I average a cast net per season , also became somewhat of an expert repairing them .

I just got my first large cast net in the mail the other day. I read the instructions and practiced throwing it in the yard. It is a 8'radius mullet net with 1 inch mesh manufactured by Betts. I soaked it for about 12 hours in water and laundry detergent. It is very soft now. I did a weak toss in the living room last night and it opened up good for such a plop of a throw. I might go try to find some baitfish on the Garmin 240 and attempt to catch them this weekend. I have never tried it so it should be a learning experience. I have seen schools of baitfish numerous times while looking for cats. I remember some of those locations so I will check there first when I do go. One area was so loaded the screen was black. Any tips would be appreciated. - Kepone

when i got mine i bought a thrower it works good for me...but what works better is I told my oldest son 16 that I would not take him anymore until he could learn to throw it(without the thrower)now I have my own personal bait catcher, works good too LOL. He also got one of those imoveable obj. last yr. now he can sew.[grin][grin][grin]

Don't throw one off the end of the courtesy pier at Deep Bottom. You'll probably snag whatever ate one of mine.

there use to be a car at the end of the Deep Bottom ramp. Fred said that people will steal cars and when they are done with them will drive them off the ramps.

Kepone, here's my advice : stay far away from trees that are lying in the water , if you get caught up in one of these , kiss your net goodbye. Also, in the event you do snag something (and it's bound to happen) position yourself overtop of the snag and try bobbing the net up and down this will loosen the weights on the net and give you a better chance of working it off the snag.

You could try throwing directly across from the Dutch gap docks in that bend that runs around past the yacht basin, this is uasually a safe place and most of the time produces some bait.

If you snag your net and rip it to shreds, cut off the lead weights around the bottom and use them as slip sinkers.

when I snag mine (happens to often) If its shallow I use a rod to grab the net so I can get to that collar. If I can get that I can get it up. If its deep as much as 40 feet I have done this. I have a wreck anchor I drag it over the net and what ever it hung 90% of the time I get it back with little of no damage. At deep bottom I have pulled a whole stump up before. Just becareful when u get it to the top u need someone to help get it off. DONT let it drowned you. Hope it helps did for me. Wayne

I went out sat. evening on the chick near blank point to try and catch something in my new cast net. I marked a lot of small fish in large dense black schools on my Gramin 240. It took me a while to hold the thing how they show in the paper. Most of my throws looked kind of below average-marginal. I did get it to open up once or twice in a nice umbrella shape. What I believe the fish were I was marking were juvenile blue cats. I got about 8 of those rascals in my net and no shad. I was casting near blank point where the 70 ft. hole is. If all those fish on my Garmin were small cats there must be thousands of them. What a disgrace. Three boats were set out in that area catfishing. One of them had about 10 lines out. I guess they are not up to par on when the spawn takes place. What would one do if the hooked into a catfish 30 pounds or better and all those lines are out? Sounds like potential for failure to me. As for the net, guess I will keep practicing. As for my pet state record cat. We went out once a few weeks ago, it was windy, the motor would not start because my brother put the wrong plugs in it, it was a disaster. May head out around July 4 and try it again. - Kepone
