Hi,

I am heading to La Paz Baja 1st week of October for a week of mother ship kayak fishing in the Sea of Cortez. So far I am bringing my Shimano Torum on a Melton Mini Tuna Lifter Rod and a Lamiglass Heavy Duty casting/Jigging rod with a Shimano Calcutta reel as well as some 10wt and 12 wt fly fishing setups. I have not used spinning reels mutch since I moved to the west coast 15 years ago as traditional and level wind baitcast reels are the preference out here. I am considering purchasing a good quality heavy duty spinning reel for long casting and fast retrieve as this will come in handy while chasing around Yellowfin Tuna. Since I last looked into Spinning reels there seems to have been many improvements in the drag and general robustness. I would be thankful for any recomendations of models or general capabilities/features to look for. I would like to match this to a casting/popping rod good for 20-30 pound drag and able to cast up to 5 oz lures. Since this will be a travel rod it needs to be at least 2 piece (4ft rod tube).

Thanks,

Thomas

First thing you have to ask is "How much am i willing to spend?" If you want a top of the line setup i would recomend a Shimano Stella or an Accurate Twin Spin. If you want something more affordable i would look into the Diawa Saltist spinners or Penn Conquer Reels. As for rods i would get a good Custom rod. They can match the rod and features to what you are targeting for about the same price as something off the shelf that is worth anything quality wise.
