Through my wife's stepfather, who is a patient, my wife and I have become involved in helping the new Central Pennsylvania Aphasia Center. Aphasia is a loss of speech, or the inability to speek correctly (stating words that are different than you mean, etc.) that usually results from brain trauma. Those of you who are or know stroke victims understand this all too well.
A young lady who started this center, which brings very valuable, life-changing therapy to folks who have exhausted their immediate hospital care, is desperately in need of funds to keep this center functioning. I know that many here have roots or other connections in Pennsylvania, so I thought I'd beat the bushes on the center's behalf in case you're aware of corporations or other organizations that might be interested in providing financial support to the center. It's webite is at http://www.aphasiacenterpa.org/.
It's mission statement is as follows:
The Central Pennsylvania Aphasia Center is a non-profit 501c3 organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for individuals with chronic aphasia and raising awareness of the disorder. Typically, speech and language therapy is offered during the early stages of aphasia recovery only. However, research suggests that with further practice, symptoms can continue to improve. The Center seeks to provide quality, yet affordable options for such continued improvement and opportunities for life enrichment.
• The Center uses a life participation approach, which places the life concerns of those affected by aphasia at the center of the decision-making.
• The program is designed to empower the individual to re-engage in life. Immediate life goals are addressed as well as long-term goals.
• The Center supports the individual with aphasia and others affected by it.
P.S.: I have no ownership interest or other financial stake in this center, other than the fact that I am a doner.
