...catching on spear!

I called Andy last week for a shot in the dark last opportunity to get to Ocean City for some spearfishing. To my surprise he was game for a day trip! My buddy Bret came along too. We crossed the bay bridge this morning and saw Bfaithful's Judge 27 Chesapeake fishing in the area. I wonder how he did?

Anyway, we launched at the beach around 9:30am and made our way out of the inlet. I had a report of clear water within reach of Andy's 20ft Seacraft and after short run with following seas we arrived at our wreck. A quick search of side scan discovered we were at our mark and it was loaded with activity. I threw the grapple and hooked up on the first drift. So far, so good... We geared up, made our dive plan and splashed. Surface temp was a nice 65 degrees. From the surface it looked to be about 10ft of visibility. A short drop to bottom revealed ever better conditions than above. It looked to be about 20ft of visibility and water temps at ~75-80 feet had not changed much from the surface and were hovering right at 64 degrees. Just as the sonar revealed, the wreck was loaded with life. Porgy, taug, sea bass, spades, trigger, blues and scary - gigantic black drum inhabited the wreckage.

We did two dives and had to cancel the third due to engine trouble which we finally narrowed down to a corroded kill switch. It was an excellent day- light winds, warm temps (both water and air), clear water, light current and lots of fish. We took a few home for dinner. Andy was a fish terminator today and has become a real good diver quickly. I'm hoping we can get one more day in before it starts to snow around here!

That's OK - just forget to call me :peace:. Hell , I'd likely freak out being able to see more then 2 feet.

Nice shooting - those Drum had to be cool to see.

Skip, these were monster drum that knew they owned that wreck. I've seen single drum on other wrecks before but never a group of seven. These fish were as big as black drum get. If Andy had an extra spot you were the next call. Andy can only fit 3 divers on his boat. We need to take the Grady next time so we can take more divers and be extra comfortable. Conditions were pretty good for Ocean City.

Took a lot of arm twisting to convince me to go.

Those drum were bad ass. Was waiting for Dave to take a ride on one. If it wasn't for the motor issues would have been a perfect day. One more dive would have been icing on the cake. Shoulda taken a picture of the boat loaded up. You could see about 4 sq' of deck space. Best part was when I going through my equipment after the 1st dive and the $200 flashlight I bought the day before was no longer clipped on my BCD. :eek2: Was glad to see Dave had his treasure finding goggles on during the 2nd dive and returned it to its rightful owner.

We'll definitely get out Skip. Definitely caught the bug. Just pissed it's almost november already.

Not to jinx you but losing a piece of gear now / then goes with wreck diving.

One thing to watch for - the lanyard on lights often wears right where it goes into the light housing.

Be sure to use good brass clips that slide when you depress the trigger to secure gear.

Avoid suicide clips ( carabiners ). They will catch line inside them and can open if you lean against a wreck just the right way.

Looks like you guys had a great day!! Sounds like a pretty good spot to dive :-) I'm hoping we get a couple more nice weekends before the snow falls. Keith
