...catching on spear!
I called Andy last week for a shot in the dark last opportunity to get to Ocean City for some spearfishing. To my surprise he was game for a day trip! My buddy Bret came along too. We crossed the bay bridge this morning and saw Bfaithful's Judge 27 Chesapeake fishing in the area. I wonder how he did?
Anyway, we launched at the beach around 9:30am and made our way out of the inlet. I had a report of clear water within reach of Andy's 20ft Seacraft and after short run with following seas we arrived at our wreck. A quick search of side scan discovered we were at our mark and it was loaded with activity. I threw the grapple and hooked up on the first drift. So far, so good... We geared up, made our dive plan and splashed. Surface temp was a nice 65 degrees. From the surface it looked to be about 10ft of visibility. A short drop to bottom revealed ever better conditions than above. It looked to be about 20ft of visibility and water temps at ~75-80 feet had not changed much from the surface and were hovering right at 64 degrees. Just as the sonar revealed, the wreck was loaded with life. Porgy, taug, sea bass, spades, trigger, blues and scary - gigantic black drum inhabited the wreckage.
We did two dives and had to cancel the third due to engine trouble which we finally narrowed down to a corroded kill switch. It was an excellent day- light winds, warm temps (both water and air), clear water, light current and lots of fish. We took a few home for dinner. Andy was a fish terminator today and has become a real good diver quickly. I'm hoping we can get one more day in before it starts to snow around here!
