I usually fish with a Hawaiian sling, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hawaiian_sling, bout 6 ft long graphite shaft with a standard 3 prong tip. I have found that this is the perfect setup for coming home with fish from the reef. I like getting up close n personal to the fish before the kill shot. I am a meat hunter, we kill to eat.
I was told by my mentor to get a sling about as tall as me for many reasons. First and foremost I can load the spear quickly and with minimal hassle . Second I can hide the spear along the length of my body when needed to fool smart and wary fish. Third a body length spear is not too cumbersome to swim with and is more comfortable in up close kill situations. When fully extended at arms length I have a 9-10 ft kill zone. I can load the spear faster and have more shots per breath than any spear gun will ever give me.
I love Hawaiian slings :0
