There was an article in the paper this week that said the VDGF will be doing Shad surveys again this year. Last time was a few years ago. They plan to focus on Ann Carrows and will be stopping returning anglers with questions about shad fishing. Length of time you fished, how many catches, type sizem, health etc.

I am hoping that will scare some of you off and make more room for me to park at Ann Carrows. [grin]

I am looking forward to the shad/herring/perch/striper blitz coming soon.

Also, the paper list a free seminar tomorrow at Fly Fishing the World at 11am. Focusing on catching the little buggars!

i talked to these guys last year when they did the same thing. nothing really revealing comes from it. my only question at the time was "what is the possibility of our bait shad becoming extinct ? you 're right the answer is NIL - it aint gonna happen. never say never !
The only bad thing we discussed is when you catch a 30 or 40 - or when I used to- catch a 30 or 40 and they spit up baby cats about 3-4"long, NOT a good thing. later gotta to to work and WORK , unlike some TF'ers. - joe[shy]

When do they put the shad cam at Bosher Dam back on line. I've seen some interesting things on that camera.

When do the shad start to show up? Is there a season?

No season. Just catch them when they are here. Some were being caught the third week of March last year. Should be in full swing by early April.

Hickory shad and American Shad. You can keep the hickories, but the Americans are illegal to posses. The herring will be here too. and White Perch, stripers. Get ready.

Keep a check on the Fly fishing board. Those guys should let us know when the shad arrive. I don't fly fish, but I need to learn how. The fly guys can out fish spinning guys 10 to 1.

Can't wait!!!!!

I use 6 hook Sabiki rigs and tear them up. My best day was over a hundred fish in 4 hours. Last year the river was flooded at the beginning of the run and probably pushed it up a little. I caught my first shad April 2nd and my best day was April 12th. On a 6 hook Sabiki, you can catch 2 or 3 shad at a time. When the perch ran we were catching 5 and 6 at a time. Doesnt get much better than that. Stock up early or you wont find any. Dicks Sporting Goods, .99 cents a pack.
