Heard the guy who owns EDITED BY THE MODERATOR got a ticket from a game warden the other day for catching bait to fish with that day in a gill net.

Anybody else heard any about this?

Do you need a license to catch bait to fish with one?

Just wondering.

Yes you do. Have to have a recreational gill net license 300' or less. Floats have to be labeled with your licence # which is a R and the last 4 digits of your social. Cant be more than 100' from the net anytime it is out and many other crazy rules. A license can be found (closest I know of) at the Shell station in West Point on Rt. 30. Trust me the license is much cheaper than the ticket![smile]

Im looking at my license now. It specifies it is a recreational license. Dont think thats the one you need. The info you need should be on the virginia marine resource commision site.

I just call them and they send mine in the mail. You have to send a check and to renew after a year you have to send old license back to them. It takes about 4 days to a week to receive them. Here's the address and ph.# Phone # 1-800-541-4646

Who do you speak to? I called lastyear, was told to send them a simple letter (no form) with some basic information about myself. They never sent me my permit. I didn't check to see if they cashed the check or not.

When I call the number 1-800-541-4646 they talk me through what I need to do and it comes in the mail. If I were you and tried again I'd tell them what happend before then maybe they would be more careful.

I called. They say you either get the permit from one of their field agents or you send in a letter and your $9 (was $7) check. So I'm sending the letter in again this year.

It depends on how fast you are with your bait knife. oops!

The answer is you can't keep the illegal species.

this is Dwayne-from Fin and Skin-funny-I didn't even know I got cited, so I'm not sure how you came up with that one. I have NEVER been cited by the game warden for anything related to my business. Yes, I do have a license for a gill net, and yes I do sell bait-I run a bait shop. BUT I buy the eels and shad from two local commercial fishermen, and a number of others, not so local. If you have questions about my business, or my practices, feel free to drop by....but I'd appreciate you not making assumptions and false statements based on rumors when all you have to do is pick up the phone and call 804.795.5917-hope to see you all on the water! Thanks to you guys that did call....your concern is much appreciated.

I just got a report about this post. I am being VERY serious about what I am going to say: If you are going to post something about someone specifically you better have some sort of facts or reference to back it up. If you read about someone/thing in the paper, or saw something first hand, heard it on the radio, or saw it on TV then you have a source. If you want to say you "heard" that such and such did something, then you need to site the source who you "heard" it from so your post has some creditability.

I am not saying that people not ask questions, but at least have some sort of source before you reference someone specifically. Otherwise not only these, but all message boards can be used to spread rumors that are not true. I am not sure what the exact intent of this post was, however it could be interpreted that you were trying to hurt this man's business. Since this is out in the open I suggest that the source be referenced and if not true an apology be rendered.

Thanks for your attention

Brandon

Wasabi you may have to go registered mail if they screw you again. It'll cost a little more but you'll have a record of whether they got you letter or not.

Brandon-
Thanks for your quick response. You are right- people need to be careful what they say, especially when it can affect someone's business or personal life. I might not post a lot on here, but I do like to read the posts to see what's going on, and I appreciate the work you do.
Sincerely,
Dwayne
